I umpired with .... at Longparish today, but
there was no tea. While we enjoyed the cricketmatch and the players were kind and respectful toeach other, I felt the conviviality of cricket wasmissing. We all know that beers after the game arenow a thing of the past, because of the dangers ofdrink-driving, but the absence of a tea meant thateach of the teams sat in their dressing rooms, whilewe (the umpires) sat in our designated room anddrank our solitary cups of tea. There were noladies or helpers in evidence to help with provisionof the tea and it all felt a bit grim. The fun of thegame is being drained away by a thousand cutsand, for me over the 50 years I played, the tea wasalways an important and pleasurable vehicle to getthe teams and ladies interacting. The teams wereeven keen to start the second innings early, asthere was no relaxed and shared experience to beenjoyed. I felt the absence of the tea acutely andknow that I will stop umpiring when the pleasurefades.
