  • Ep. 33 | Dr. Laura Berman, Sam Chapman, Titania Jordan, Marc Berkman & Dr. Roger Crystal - Let Parents Protect
We have received a drastic increase in phone calls from parents and family members about tragic loss due to fentanyl overdose death. After our conversation on Ep. 24 with Dr. Laura Berman, whose son Samuel lost his life to a pill he purchased on snapchat, we were left heartbroken and passionate about finding, or creating, a real solution to this problem. We connected Dr. Berman with our Ep. 9 Guest, Titania Jordan, who is the Chief Parent Officer at BARK technologies and they, along with others, came up with #LetParentsProtect—A petition for Snapchat, TikTok, and other social media platforms to urge them to allow parents to use third party monitoring tools like BARK to protect children online. The petition argues that in order to save lives, parents need to be the ones who make the choice about whether they want to use third party safety apps, and we couldn’t agree more.

Today on The Balanced Voice we welcome Dr. Berman and Titania Jordan back to the podcast along with Dr. Berman’s husband, Samuel Chapman, Marc Berkman the CEO of the Organization for Social media Safety, and Roger Crystal, CEO of Opiant Pharmaceuticals, Inc and the founder of NARCAN Nasal Spray to discuss the need for better regulations on social media and the dangers of fentanyl. We beg everyone to go to the link in our show notes to sign the petition and #LetParentsProtect!

  • Ep. 32 | Doug Forbes and Elena Matyas - Camp Accountability
Swimming, sports, time with friends, and making memories; summer camps should be filled with worry-free joy. Abuse, death, and drowning should NEVER be on the list of activities at camp.

This week on #thebalancedvoicepodcast we sit down with Doug Forbes and Elena Matyas whose six-year old, Roxie Forbes, tragically drowned at a camp in California in the summer of 2019. The California Department of Social Services later determined the camp to be an illegal child care facility with fraudulently certified lifeguards.

After their loss, Doug and Elena established the Meow Meow Foundation in honor of Roxie’s favorite stuffed animal, “Meow Meow”. They have worked tirelessly to put an end to preventable drownings and raise awareness about summer camp issues such as abuse and neglect. Support their mission at meowmeowfoundation.org.

In this episode, we discuss the dangers that can arise at summer camps, the lack of oversight of camp facilities, and share what parents take into consideration before choosing a summer camp.

  • Ep. 31 | Judy O'Brien - Offenders & Society
How do you think we should hold sex offenders accountable in our community? Does our current system truly keep our community safe?

This week, we sit down with Judy O’Brien, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Sex Offender Treatment Provider here in Houston. In this balanced conversation we discuss recent changes in predatory behaviors, the role of power and control for offenders, and the false sense of security that the sex offender registry could be providing.

Ultimately, we answer this question: Is there a better way to hold sex offender accountable and prevent victimization within our communities?

We believe that open dialogue about this sensitive topic is one of the best preventative measures, however, some may find our conversation about sex offenders to be uncomfortable, so viewer discretion is advised. We hope you will join this conversation by sending us your thoughts and questions after the show on Instagram or Twitter!

  • Ep. 29 | Dr. Elizabeth Cauffman - Juvenile Offenders
Do you believe juvenile offenders should be treated as adults? What if you knew the part of their brain that regulates impulses does not fully develop until roughly 25? Does that change things?

This week on The Balanced Voice Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Elizabeth Cauffman, Professor at the University of California Irvine, whose research is vital to the conversation surrounding the rights and treatment of juvenile offenders.

Dr. Cauffman’s research addresses the intersect between adolescent development and juvenile justice. She has published over 100 articles, chapters, and books on topics in the study of contemporary adolescence, adolescent brain development, risk-taking and decision-making, parent-adolescent relationships, and juvenile justice.

As a mother herself, Dr. Cauffman approaches conversations about these incredibly challenging topics with clarity and compassion.

In today’s balanced conversation we ultimately answer THIS question: Can juvenile offenders stop offending and become healthy members of society?
