In this episode I am joined by Kassidi Jones. Kassidi is a PHD candidate in African American Studies in English at Yale University, social justice advocate, and content creator behind @gingers_naps on Instagram. In addition to posting super cute pics of her dog Ginger, she discusses the intersections of race and animal welfare. We dive into the fraught relationship between African Americans and dogs in the United States and the discrimination that still shows up today.  We also discuss how we as pet parents and those that work in the pet industry, can do our part to bring about change.

A mental health crisis is affecting the veterinary community.  According to the American Medical Veterinary Association 1 in 6 veterinarians considers suicide at some point in their career.  Risk of death by suicide for male vets is 1.6 times more than for the general population and for female vets 2.4 times more than the general population: 80% of veterinarians  are women. The numbers for vet technicians are staggering as well. In this episode I chat with Dr. Taylor Miller of Not One More Vet. Not One More Vet is a non-profit dedicated to providing support, education, and awareness for veterinarians and their technicians. We chat about some of the pressures, realities, and emotional stress of being a veterinarian, as well  as the toll the pandemic took on the industry.  We also discuss some of the ways we as pet guardians can be more mindful and even a little more prepared for our vet visits.

In this episode I am joined by Alexis Devine, the woman behind the viral sensation "Bunny the talking dog".   Alexis is the pet parent of Bunny the talking sheepadoodle and Otter the poodle. Inspired by speech-language pathologist Chrisitina Hunger's work with her own dog,  Alexis began training her dog Bunny to speak using an augmentative and alternative communication device ( A.A.C)  otherwise known as sound buttons. When Bunny was about six months old they joined a study with the comparative cognition lab at UC San Diego, which studies whether or not non-humans are able to express themselves in language-like ways .  Much to the delight of millions of followers, Alexis has been documenting her journey with Bunny and Otter on social media all along the way.
We talk a little bit about the science behind these buttons,  her journey with Bunny and Otter, and some of the lessons she has learned along the way.
