Before the Toa ever arrived on Mata Nui, the Matoran were led by six leaders called the Turaga. They were fairly mysterious beings, and they seemed to have a lot of knowledge and experience. Once the Toa had landed on the island and started their various quests, they, like the Matoran before them, looked to their respective Turaga for guidance and wisdom. However, they often received little of use from these elders, sometimes acquiring instructions that would actively and unnecessarily put them in harm's way. The Turaga instructions were never meant to be deliberately malicious, but they had a knack for acting pretty stupid, considering they were the "wise" and "helpful" leaders on Mata Nui. So what's up with them, and why are they so strange? From Rahi speech to kidnappings to great masks, join us as we learn about the Turaga and their stories on the island of Mata Nui.In the latter half of the podcast, we discuss the official sets and some of the unique choices LEGO® made when designing the Turaga. While the Toa were lost at sea for 1,000 years, the Matoran villagers of Mata Nui built their society and defended their new home. The continued survival of the Matoran is crucial to the Bionicle universe, and this postulate is tested rigorously as Makuta threatens to enslave the Matoran time and again. After a failed attempt to subdue the villagers of the island with infected rahi, Makuta unleashes the Bohrok. These creatures were created with one purpose—to cleanse Mata Nui completely.

In 2001 when lego was on the verge of bankruptcy, they decided to release the Bionicle toyline, featuring living robots called toa, washing up on the shores of a mysterious island called Mata Nui. This decision changed the fortunes of the lego group and gave birth to one of the most beloved toy lines ever put to plastic.
