Compact Warfare

The Battle of Actium

Listen Later

In 31 BC, one naval battle would decide the fate of the Roman world. Off the coast of Greece near Actium, the fleets of Octavian and Mark Antony clashed in a struggle that would end decades of civil war. With Cleopatra's powerful Egyptian navy at his side, Antony hoped to defeat Octavian and secure control of Rome.

Instead, the battle would end in dramatic fashion, with Cleopatra's sudden withdrawal from the battlefield and Antony abandoning the fight to follow her. The defeat shattered Antony's power and allowed Octavian to rise unchallenged, eventually becoming Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.

In this episode of Compact Warfare, we explore the political rivalry that led to the battle, the dramatic naval clash itself, and how the outcome transformed the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire.
