Singer-Songwriter Eric Erdman not only wrote and sings many of your favorite Trop Rock songs and is a multiple-time Trop Rock Music Association Songwriter of the Year, he is also the co-writer of Stone’s Throw, a two-time RIAA Gold Certified hit performed by the Red Clay Strays.

• Eric started writing songs at eight years old, sitting at the end of his family's pier on Mobile Bay, Alabama.

Eric Erdman, a notable figure in the trop rock music scene, reflects on his journey from a young songwriter to a celebrated artist. His story is one of community, creativity, and the magic of collaboration.

Eric's entry into the trop rock genre is an interesting tale. Initially, he didn't see himself fitting in. "I don’t know if I’m considered a legend of trop rock, but I appreciate you saying that," he said. His friend Wes Loper introduced him to the Trop Rock community, and although he started with few island-themed songs, the welcoming nature of the scene allowed him to explore and grow as a songwriter. "They could have easily just been like, this guy doesn’t fit our thing, but they were like, he’s close, give him a chance."

Eric discusses the collaborative spirit that drives much of his songwriting. He believes that co-writing can expedite the creative process, stating, "I know something in this is magic. (Sometimes) I am unable to pull it out on my own."

One of Eric's most beloved songs, "Family Tree," written with Donny Brewer, beautifully encapsulates the essence of the Trop Rock community. The idea stemmed from Eric's gratitude towards the community that embraced him. "When I see inflatable palm trees, it just represents the community, this welcoming, beautiful thing. That’s our family tree," he explained. The collaborative effort to write the song with fellow artists was a testament to the strong bonds within the Trop Rock family.

In discussing his writing process, Eric shares that great songs often take time. "You want to play this song for the rest of your life and your grandchildren," he reminds us, emphasizing the importance of patience in songwriting. He also nots that while some songs might come easily, others require significant effort and collaboration to reach their full potential.

Eric's journey as a troubadour is a reminder of the power of music to bring people together, and his story resonates with anyone who appreciates the beauty of community and creativity in the arts.

House Concerts: The Heart of the Trop Rock Experience

Hi, I'm Bill Hurley with this special edition of the Beach Maniac Island Music Podcast, where today we focus on house concerts, the highly unique and incredibly personal way to connect with your favorite chop rock artists. If you've never been to a house concert, you're missing one of the best kept secrets in live music. Unlike large venues where you're one face in a crowd, a house concert gives you the chance to experience talented musicians in an intimate and relaxed setting. The audience is close enough to see every smile, every laugh, and every interaction between the artists. Between songs, you'll often hear the stories behind the music, the inspiration for the lyrics, and the friendship that makes this community so special.

House concerts have become an important part of the Trop Rock world. They give artists a chance to connect with fans on a personal level, and they give fans the opportunity to experience incredible performances in a way that's simply not possible from the back row of a concert hall. It's less about the stage and more about the personal experience, good music, good friends, and the feeling that for a few hours, everyone is part of the same island family.

We've been there before several times, but this time the featured artists were two outstanding musicians, Kirstie Kraus and Jason Acy. Both have made their mark on the Trop Rock scene with their songwriting, musicianship, and entertaining live performances. 

And together they created an afternoon that everyone in attendance will remember. I've been to Timler's Tiki Bar several times and came away from every performance feeling like I not only saw incredible talent up close, but that I made new friends, especially with the musicians themselves.

BILL: Are AI Music Generators Evil, or are they awesome? Hi, I’m Bill Hurley, and in this special episode of the Beach Maniac Island Music Podcast we explore that issue with a source that has inside information – AI itself. I directly asked ChatGPT some pointed questions about the pros and cons of music generators, and its answers might surprise you. I’ve converted those answers to audio, set’s jump right in. …

Alright AI. Some musicians are angry about AI music generators and feel you are stealing the music they worked so hard to create. Others are embracing you as a new tool to help them create better music. How do you respond? AI — are you here to replace musicians? 

AI: 
No — I’m here to challenge them, assist them, and sometimes annoy them — but not replace them. Music is human communication. I can generate patterns and styles, but I don’t live a life, fall in love, play dive bars, or bomb on stage. Musicians do. 

BILL: 
Some artists say AI music generators are basically creative theft machines — trained on human songs and copying them. Fair criticism? 

AI: 
It’s a fair concern. I learn from large patterns across music, not from memorizing and reproducing specific songs. But ethically, the industry is still working out boundaries — consent, attribution, compensation. Musicians are right to demand transparency and fair rules. 

BILL: 
So you’re saying the fear isn’t crazy. 

AI: 
Not crazy — but incomplete. Every major music technology — multitrack recording, drum machines, sampling, autotune — was once called “the death of real music.” Instead, they became tools. AI is another tool — but a powerful one that needs thoughtful guardrails. 

BILL: 
Let’s talk usefulness. Give me real, practical ways AI music generators help working musicians — not tech hype — real value. 

AI: 
Sure. Three big ones: 

First — idea generation. When a writer is stuck, AI can produce chord paths, lyric sparks, or melodic variations to break creative gridlock. 

Second — production speed. Demo tracks, arrangement experiments, genre style tests — fast and cheap. 

Third — access. Musicians without full bands or studio budgets can prototype fuller sounds. 

BILL: 
Okay — now the other side. What are the real downsides for musicians? 

AI: 
Oversupply and sameness. When anyone can generate hundreds of tracks instantly, discoverability gets harder. Also, some creators may rely too heavily on AI and weaken their own craft. And yes — there are legitimate economic concerns for session players and composers in certain markets. 

BILL: 
Let me ask the uncomfortable question. Is AI-generated music “soulless”? 

AI: 
It can be — if used lazily. But soul comes from choices, context, and intention. If a musician directs, edits, and shapes AI output, the result can carry human meaning. Think of AI like a studio full of very fast interns — not a finished artist. 

BILL: 
For songwriters worried about being replaced — what should they focus on developing that AI can’t copy well? 

AI: 
Personal voice. Lived experience. Performance nuance. Community connection. AI can imitate styles — it struggles with identity. The more unmistakably you your work is, the safer you are. 

BILL: 
Final verdict. One sentence. Are AI music generators evil or valuable? 

AI: 
They are amplifiers — they magnify the intent of the user. In careless hands, harmful. In creative hands, valuable.

Award-winning Trop Rock artist, songwriter, producer, and world traveler Donny Brewer has truly shaped the modern Trop Rock landscape. He has won at least 25 Trop Rock Music Association awards including Entertainer Of The Year 6 times. He’s on tour full time living in a Winnebago with his wife Michelle, and playing everything from solo house concerts to large festival shows, sometimes with his 7 piece band the Dock Rockers. Donny’s known for his energy on stage, his humor, his generosity off stage, and his ability to take a simple beach theme and turn it into something memorable.
