My guest today, Emily Pasnak-Lapchick,  lives in Saint Petersburg, FL (we call it St Pete)  with her life partner Andres and two cats (there seems to be a theme with cats lately - since my recent guest Alise Sauders travels with her two cats.  It just occurred to me that I have a lot of friends and family that have two cats, and I’m allergic to cats!

Wouldn’t it be great if you could just leave your job, travel AND make a living doing it?

In 2018, Alise left her corporate life and six-figure salary, feeling like she wasn’t living life fully.  She created her first business, a virtual bookkeeping company, and two years later realized and  embraced her dream of being a travel blogger.

She and her husband Gregg, let their apartment lease expire, sold or gifted most of their belongings, and with no home to return to, they (along with their two cats) set out on a transformational travel journey

Sounds beachy-breezy, right?  Well, for Elise it meant a lot more than just packing a bag and heading out on the road. It meant healing trauma she had been hiding from from since childhood and get past the beliefs that she thought were keeping her safe, but were really just holding her back and making her physically sick.     

But this isn’t all we talk about, there’s plenty of beachy stuff, too!

This episode is a bit of a departure from my typical beachy conversation - I mean, what does an end-of-life, death doula have to do with the beach?

Please stick with me on this one because once you hear my guest, the Sacred Servant,  Nada Frazier, I think you’ll have a good idea why I invited her back to the podcast. 

My first conversation with Nada was in 2019 when the podcast was just beginning- episode 13 -  and since then, it’s been one of my most downloaded episodes. I highly recommend that you go back and listen - since it will give you an idea of what it means to be a death doula and how we can all think about death - and life - a little differently.

What I’d like you to think about today is conscious community and freedom to live a happy, healthy life - which is what we love about the beach! It’s where we go to feel that sense of peace and ease, healing and happiness. And well, if you have listened to my story, you’ll know the beach has also been my relief from pain and loss.

Radio Trop Rock is speaking and The Beach is listening -  because it's all about the music!

Have you heard of Tropical Rock or Trop Rock?  I have to admit I didn’t until today’s guest, Eric Babin reached out to me with a story about how he left the Navy and went from hosting house parties for local bands from Florida to Texas and in between, traveling to beach music festivals just for fun, to a second career as owner of an internet radio station - Radio Trop Rock. 

So what is Tropical Rock? Well, if you Google it like I did, it’s described as a genre of popular music that incorporates elements and influences of rock, reggae, country, folk, and calypso - inspired by an island style: think Jimmy Buffett wastin’ away in Margaritaville" - or the Zac Brown Band with their "toes in the water, ass in the sand." Yeah, I think you get it. 

I you Google “Trop Rock” chances are Radio Trop Rock will be top of the list because for the past five years in a row Radio Trop Rock has earned EVERY award within the industry! 

Yeah, I’d say in the Tropical Rock world, they’re kind of a big deal. But just like the music, Eric is as laid back, just livin’ the beach life, as it comes. For him, the musicians and the fans are the big deal.

Do you ever wonder why bad things happen to good people?

My guest today, Kevin Lowe, believes everything in this life happens for a reason, and a good reason at that.  For the first 17 years of his life Kevin saw the world just like everyone else. But for the past 18 years has only seen the world through the eyes of the blind. 

Kevin admits that living in a town with "Beach" in its name (Daytona Beach) he takes the beach for granted most of the time,  but the truth is - the beach truly does speak.

Hey, Beach Lovers! You know when you meet somebody, and there’s something about their energy and excitement for life - you just want to know more? 

Well, that’s my guest Elikqitie - the host of Travel Gluten Free podcast. I met her at
PodfestExpo in Orlando. We were sitting in on a session about how to use Canva for our podcast, and the person that was supposed to present couldn’t make it, so the emcee asked if there was anyone in the room that knew Canva, and Elikqitie chimed in from the back of the room: "I can show you some of my tips" - and before we knew it, she was upfront with her laptop projected on the screen, showing us all her tips and tricks, and well, it was just an example of what’s in her nature - helping others find ways to work around life’s challenges. 

So afterward, I went up to thank her and learn a little bit more about her podcast, and of course, The topic of the beach and beach travel came up - we discovered we had a lot of beach adventures in common - So, as many podcasters do - we decided to do a podcast guest swap! 

Today we talk about what the beaches are  like on the Pacific Coast, some of her best  - and worst travel adventures, and what it’s like to travel gluten-free - especially when you’ve been diagnosed with  celiac disease where even the slightest exposure to gluten can really make you sick- and that’s no fun  

And while you might not be “gluten-free” -  I think we can all relate to the idea that regardless of your limitations, it’s about freedom. It’s like Elikqitie says "You can still enjoy your life. You can still travel. Don’t let your autoimmune disease or any disability you have take away your freedom to enjoy life the way you want to. . .so go out there, learn what you have to do, and enjoy life!"

I’m having one of those days where it’s been difficult to do any work. The weather is beautiful, and I can hear the beach - and it’s calling my name! 

I’ll admit, I struggle with discipline and consistency  - especially with this podcast. What do you do when you’re in a funk?  Do you wallow in your feelings, in thoughts of sadness, self-pity or resentment? - or maybe you stuff it all down, toss a blanket of positivity over it and act like everything’s just beachy" 

Been there, done that.  In fact, for the first few months of this year, I was right there - not full-blown depression - just that sad feeling that followed me around like a Charlie Brown raincloud. 

Imagine everywhere around you it’s sunny - not a cloud in the sky, except for one lonely raincloud that just so happens to be right above your head. Wherever you go, it goes. 

And there’s nothing anyone can do or say that will help you feel better.  You just have to see it, feel it, and then:

Let. It. Go.

That’s what my friend Judi and I are talking about today. 

 She had been in a pretty deep funk and was telling me all about it when I stopped her and said - this would make a great topic for the podcast!  So we hopped on Squadcast (my favorite for remote recording) and recorded our chat. 

 So, if you’ve been in a funk, I hope after listening, you’ll feel a little more like stepping out from under that Charlie Brown rain cloud and into the beachy sunshine.
