The Bearded Mystic Podcast

Grief, Gratitude, and Remembering True Nature After My Father’s Passing

Host Rahul N Singh returns to The Bearded Mystic Podcast after a break and shares that his father died last month, reflecting on grief, regrets, and learning to face loss directly without denying emotions or spiraling in them. He describes finding steadiness through prayer, simran, and witnessing feelings, emphasizing that memories remain and that his father was a major influence on his spirituality. Rahul expresses gratitude for being present in his father’s final moments and for support from community, family, friends, and his wife, noting the importance of staying connected rather than withdrawing from spirituality. He highlights non-dual teachings about abiding as pure consciousness, remembering one’s true nature, and viewing death through the lens of oneness, including references to Nij Gar and the Bhagavad Gita.

Rahul N Singh returns to The Bearded Mystic Podcast after 3–4 months to reflect on spirituality, especially seva (selfless service), humility, and remaining an observer rather than the doer amid praise and criticism. He discusses measuring humility by seeing others as the highest, God, or Guru, and notes how family feedback can reveal ego. He shares that increased reading has deepened his sense of “not knowing,” while non-dual, Formless Awareness feels undeniable and effortless when not forcing outcomes. Referencing his Guru’s teaching on self-introspection (artan), he describes witnessing thoughts, emotions, roles, and challenges without identifying with them, cultivating detachment and peace. He outlines stages of disidentification from body, mind, and even soul/jeev imprints, warning that ego can co-opt ideas like “I am God.” He invites listener reflections and plans more episodes now that his son is in school.

The importance we place on the name we give to God reveals more about our spiritual maturity than our understanding of divine truth. Spiritual growth involves recognizing that names for the divine are just different expressions pointing to the same ultimate reality.

• Names for God vary across traditions - God, Allah, Brahman, Nirankar - but all refer to the same divine essence
• How we receive blessings from different traditions demonstrates our spiritual maturity
• Words like love, compassion, and kindness can all be used to describe the ultimate essence
• Attachment to specific divine names often reflects ego rather than spiritual realization
• Names themselves can become idols just as physical forms can
• Appreciating someone's blessing regardless of terminology honors their intention
• Spiritual maturity involves moving beyond fixation on specific words or names
• When someone offers a blessing, they're giving their time and positive intention

Your true nature is like the vast sky—unchanging and untouched by the storms of thoughts and emotions that pass through your awareness. When we understand ourselves as formless consciousness rather than our passing mental states, we find freedom not by stopping our emotions but by recognizing they cannot bind our true nature.

• Thoughts and emotions are like clouds that appear and disappear in the sky of consciousness
• Our true nature is like the sky—vast, unchanging, and unharmed by mental storms
• The formless awareness (Nirguna Brahman) holds all beings just as the sky holds all clouds
• Practice remembering you're not the passing emotion but the open, silent awareness
• Use practices like mantra repetition to stabilize the mind during emotional turbulence
• Freedom comes not from stopping emotions but from knowing you were never bound by them
• See emotions as objects rather than subjects to gain mastery over them
• The more we abide as formless awareness, the more peaceful and at ease we become

In this episode of the Bearded Mystic Podcast, host Rahul N Singh delves into the profound Upanishadic teaching 'Tat Tvam Asi' which translates to 'You are That'. He explains this powerful saying, often mentioned in the Chandogya Upanishad, emphasizing the non-separation between the self and the infinite reality, Brahman. Rahul discusses how awareness is fundamental to our true nature and how ignorance of this truth creates the illusion of separateness. He stresses the importance of self-inquiry and guidance from a Satguru to remove this ignorance and realize our formless, divine essence. The episode encourages integrating this awareness into every aspect of life, promoting stability, oneness, and a spiritual way of living beyond mere belief in a distant deity.

Gratitude transcends being thankful for what we have and becomes a recognition of who we truly are—formless awareness that is already whole and complete.

• Vedantic perspective reveals our true nature (Atman) lacks nothing and cannot be influenced by worldly desires
• Living as a non-doer (akarta) makes gratitude effortless and free from dependency
• Every breath is grace and every moment is a gift from the formless one
• True gratitude manifests as kindness, consideration, humility and compassion toward others
• Begin each day with gratitude for awareness itself—the consciousness that allows you to perceive anything
• Creating an atmosphere of nurture, care and understanding in your home
• Recognizing that you yourself are the blessing, not just counting blessings

Our bodies are like fragile pots while our true nature is the boundless awareness that exists both within and beyond physical form.

• The body is finite, fragile and breakable like a pot or glass
• When we realize we are the space inside and outside the pot, we transcend physical limitations
• Even when the body dies, consciousness remains unchanged
• In Advaita Vedanta, a guru helps us recognize our true nature as boundless consciousness
• All beings are like pots held within the same vast space of formless awareness
• Shifting identity from body to awareness happens when we notice consciousness perceiving bodily changes
• Nothing can break, destroy or harm your true nature as limitless awareness

Remember, don't cling to the pot - realize the limitless awareness within, and you will never feel small again.

Guru Purnima celebrates the sacred relationship between spiritual teacher and disciple, honoring the guru's role in revealing our true nature as formless awareness. The ultimate gift a guru offers is showing us that when we realize our nature is bliss, we no longer merely feel peace—we become peace itself.

• The guru serves as a medium for highest wisdom, revealing Brahm Gyan (knowledge of formless reality)
• True devotion to the guru means living in awareness of formless consciousness, not just offering praise
• Ethical teachings from gurus guide householders in balancing spiritual life with worldly responsibilities
• Householder path and monk path are equally valid—what matters is following your natural tendencies
• Spiritual growth comes through guru's grace rather than personal effort
• Being a sincere disciple means embodying the teachings in daily life
• The mark of true realization is maintaining awareness of the formless even when not in the guru's presence

Thank you for listening to this Guru Purnima episode. If you've found value in these teachings, please share with others who might benefit from understanding the true nature of the guru-disciple relationship.

We explore a profound listener question about what comes after experiencing formless awareness and whether spiritual development plateaus after self-realization.

• Celebrating when abstract spiritual concepts become experientially clear through consistent practice
• Understanding that formless awareness exists beyond body, intellect, ego, and memory
• Recognizing that seeking "what's next" after self-realization often comes from remaining ego
• Explaining why spiritual powers (siddhis) aren't necessary for genuine enlightenment
• Addressing the misconception that awakening should grant control over the material world
• Exploring how true self-realization changes our relationship to experience rather than giving supernatural abilities
• Finding contentment in the "plateau" of awareness without needing to climb higher spiritual levels
• Understanding how being a "disciple" can continue to bring joy even after self-realization
• Learning to recognize when we're searching for the glasses already on our face

Let me know your questions about meditation and non-duality! I'm planning to restart weekly meditation sessions soon, so keep an eye out for notifications about that in the future.

After a brief hiatus, I'm back with updates about shifting from my course development to writing a book about spiritual awakening that I wish I had when starting my journey.

• Book will marry the Brahmagyaan I received with Advaita Vedanta philosophy
• Writing with my son Krish in mind as the future reader
• Includes both theoretical knowledge and practical application through Shravanam, Mananam, Nididhyasana
• Challenge of translating personal experience into concise, effective language
• Fundamental shift from seeing ourselves as "human beings having spiritual experiences" to "spiritual beings having human experiences"
• Breaking free from the cycle of samsara which operates like a hamster wheel
• Importance of humility in true spiritual realization
• Book aims to help readers understand their true nature for lasting peace and contentment
