Dr. Mark Haub is currently a professor at Kansas State University. He has a Bachelors in Psychology from Fort Hays State University, as well as a Masters in Exercise Science. He also holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Kansas.
Dr. Haub has researched many interesting nutrition-related topics, such as sodium bicarbonate and sodium citrate in sports performance, as well as high-fat diets vs high-carbohydrate diets in endurance athletes. The list goes on.
For those of you that have been in the nutrition-evidence space for the past decade, you may recognize Dr. Haub from his 2010 claim to fame as the "Twinkie Diet Professor." This all came about during his teachings of energy balance at Kansas State University. Not only was Dr. Haub working a stressful job as a college professor, he was also a husband and father to a young toddler. At the time, he was the heaviest he had ever weighed in his life, so in an effort to lose weight, Dr. Haub undertook a 10-week weight loss diet to demonstrate to his students the concept of energy balance. To spice things up a little, in order to debunk the 2010 USA Nutrition Guidelines—which stated that all solid fats and refined carbohydrates were obesogenic—he included a range of processed foods high in refined sugars and saturated fats. Dr. Haub shares these findings with us today, along with a host of other interesting topics!
