The story of the rich young ruler has lessons for everyone, rich and poor, at all times. It teaches that we can achieve eternal life through Christ and his grace.

In Jesus' day, the Jews had almost lost sight of the truth of God's free grace. The rabbis taught that God's favor must be earned by merit. They hoped to obtain the reward of the righteous through their own works.

Therefore, his entire cult was led by an avid and mercenary spirit. Not even Christ's disciples were completely free from this spirit. And the Savior took every opportunity to show them their error. Christ did not lessen the demands of the law.

In unmistakable language, he presented obedience to her as a condition of eternal life—the same condition required of Adam before the fall. The Lord now expects no less from us than he expected from human beings in Paradise: perfect obedience and blameless justice.

The requirements under the covenant of grace are as broad as those dictated in Eden: Harmony with the law of God, which is Holy, just, and good. The self-lover is a transgressor of the law. Jesus wanted to reveal this to the young man. Then, he subjected him to a test that would reveal the selfishness of his heart. The young man did not wish for further clarification.

He had nurtured an idol in his soul, and the world was his God. He professed to have kept the commandments but was destitute of the principle, which is the very spirit and life of all the commandments. He did not have a genuine love for God and human beings.

This lack was everything that would qualify him to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. In his love of self and earthly gain, he was out of harmony with the principles of heaven. It is important to understand what Jesus meant to teach when he said this.

“The impossible with men is possible with God,” Mark 10:27. History clarifies that obedience is essential for salvation, but that’s not all.

We will not get to heaven by our own efforts. We need God's grace to be saved. This is the main point. The solution to human guilt is the death of Christ. Therefore, the grace of Christ and his resurrection enable us to obey his commandments.
