Kidnapping for ransom and extortion is an escalating global issue that significantly affects individuals, families, and businesses. In South Africa, the latest SAPS crime statistics show a dramatic rise, with 17,061 kidnappings recorded in 2023/24. While kidnappers may target anyone for financial gain, children, the wealthy, executives, and tourists are especially vulnerable. In some cases, businesses are also targeted for extortion. While some ransoms are relatively small—around R 500 000—others can soar to between R 72 million and R 150 million, particularly in major cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Polokwane. We speak to Calvin Rafadi, a forensic investigator, as we explore both the psychological impact on victims and their families and the growing threat of staged kidnappings.
