Discover the truth behind American milk brands and learn which ones are authentic.
Milk cartons with red barns and cheerful cows can be misleading. Often, a single processor controls numerous brands, and major retailers may own the bottling facilities. Even prominent organic brands have undergone changes unnoticed by many consumers.
We trace milk back from store shelves to processing plants, cooperatives, and farms, examining 13 milk brands and categories closely. These include Target Good and Gather, Aldi Friendly Farms, Walmart Great Value, Member's Mark, Kirkland Signature Organic, DairyPure, regional Dairy Farmers of America brands, Lactaid, Maple Hill, Horizon Organic, Fairlife, raw milk, and unbranded private-label gallons.
Only six brands offer a distinct difference: Prairie Farms, Organic Valley, Clover Sonoma, Kalona SuperNatural, Straus Family Creamery, and your local cream-top dairy.
Our findings are based on product labels, USDA organic regulations, CDC outbreak data, court settlements, and reports on farm contract losses. While ordinary pasteurized milk is not deemed unsafe, settlements do not imply wrongdoing, which is clarified where applicable.

Turmeric and paprika often have additives that alter their color and weight for profit, as noted by the FDA. Unfortunately, this type of fraud is difficult to trace back to a specific brand.
However, Consumer Reports has conducted tests on 126 spice jars available in the U.S. market, checking for harmful metals like lead, arsenic, and cadmium. Turmeric and paprika were among the worst-offending spices. This episode reveals eight brands to avoid and highlights four brands that tested safe.
We delve into how these metals affect health, why there's no federal lead limit on spices, and how to verify any brand's safety before purchase.

Have you ever found a can at the back of your pantry with an expired date? Before you discard it, consider that in the US, the FDA doesn't mandate expiration dates for most canned goods. These dates often indicate flavor peak rather than safety.
We've analyzed FDA and USDA guidelines, reviewed a case of 109-year-old canned peaches from a Missouri River shipwreck, and compiled a list of 20 essential canned foods for you to stockpile before 2026. From shelf-stable staples to a critical acidic item you should rotate, discover key insights including sodium levels, mercury advice on canned tuna and sardines, a handy drain-and-rinse tip, and a quick 5-second can check.
Remember, the rule of thumb: always check the can seam, not just the date!
