In this episode, I sit down with a friend and business consultant living and working in Japan to talk about what it’s really like to navigate life in Japan as a foreigner. We discuss his journey to Japan, including his JET Program roots and what first sparked his interest in the country.
We also explore the importance of building a network and finding connections in Japan, especially when navigating a new culture and professional environment. We talk about whether Japanese language ability is truly necessary to get around, and the ways that language can either open doors or create challenges for foreigners.
The conversation also takes a more serious turn as we discuss maternity harassment in Japan, the pressures surrounding work and family, and some of the cultural and societal challenges that can be difficult for foreigners to understand or navigate.
Ultimately, this episode looks beyond the typical image of Japan and explores both the opportunities and challenges of living there—from making connections and finding your place to dealing with cultural differences and moments when Japanese society can simply feel overwhelming.

In this episode of the BEU Podcast, I discuss the Japanese word 頑張る (Ganbaru). I explore its deeper meaning within the context of Japanese culture and societal norms. I also share my personal experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with other moments that have shaped my understanding of this powerful concept—and why it's so deeply ingrained in everyday life in Japan.
In this episode Ashley discusses how he decided to depart the United States for Japan 13 years ago. While telling this story he gives tips on learning Japanese, the benefits in students studying abroad, and insight on finding work in Japan. If you give this a listen, the hope is that is to give you the courage to learn that language you have been talking about studying or make that leap to live abroad.
