AS A BELIEVER

You were washed: Eternally cleansed of your sin and a new creation in Christ.

You were sanctified: set apart with your eternal position in Jesus and “called out” with all believers to represent Him.

You were justified: declared righteous before God by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus for your sin.

The primary point of this passage is found in 1 Cor. 6:19-20

This passage is built around three sayings the Corinthians used to rationalize their sin.

• “All things are lawful for me” (6:12)
• “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food” (6:13-17)

SPIRITUAL ONENESS: GROWING TOGETHER IN YOU LOVE FOR JESUS.

EMOTIONAL ONENESS: COMMITMENT TO EXCLUSIVE FEELINGS.

MISSIONAL ONENESS: GOING IN THE SAME DIRECTION AT THE SAME TIME FOR THE SAME REASON.

• Every other sin (or every sin) a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body (6:18)

FOUR GOALS OF OUR STUDY IN 1 CORINTHIANS

PROCLAMATION AND DEMONSTRATION 

Focus (and refocus) on Jesus.
Deal with issues of the “flesh.”
Invest and engage in meaningful relationships.
Share Jesus with clarity and relevance.
Paul exhorted the Corinthians for ignoring sexual sin in the church (5:1-5)

Pornea refers to any illicit sexual act outside of marriage between a man and a woman.  

Paul used the analogy of the Passover to urge believers to address issues of sexual sin (5:5-7). 

Paul explained the seriousness of sin by instructing believers how to relate to an unrepentant believer (5:9-13)

We must be those who understand our culture and understand our hearts. We must understand what is at stake.

1 Corinthians: Four Goals

- Focus and (refocus) on Jesus.
- Deal with the issues of the “flesh.
- Engage in meaningful relationships.
- Share Jesus with clarity and relevance.

1. Leadership is a God-given responsibility with God-sized challenges.

2. Leadership is based on the bold confidence we have in Jesus.

3. Leadership is Servant Leadership (Surrendered to Jesus. Committed to others.)

4. Servant Leaders are stewards of the Gospel.

5. Servant Leaders are responsible to please God, not people.

6. Servant Leaders are willing to make significant sacrifices.

Biblical Principles of Stewardship

- God owns all things (Ps. 24:1; 50:10-12).
- All things we receive are a gift from him (Rom. 11:35-36; James 1:17).
- All things we receive must be used for him (Luke 12:48b; 1 Cor. 4:2).
