(I) WHY STUDY ABOUT TOTAL ABSTINENCE?

1. Why is it important?

1. While opposing the sin of drunkenness, Orthodox Presbyterian Church held that the responsible use of beverage alcohol is nowhere prohibited by the Word of God, claiming that God alone is Lord of the conscience. This was one of the issues that led to the split and start of the Bible-Presbyterian Church. 1

2. Even among those that advocated total abstinence, there is a “change from total abstinence to a trend of acceptance of alcohol . . . The emphasis has moved from warnings about alcohol to highlighting Christian freedom. . . Fewer than 25 percent of Protestant churchgoers believe the Bible teaches total abstinence from alcohol and 55 percent say alcoholic beverages can be consumed without sin.” 2

3. The Christian needs to come to a clear conclusion and conviction on the topic which has such contrasting views and because of the prevalent social drinking, even drunkenness, among believers.

II) WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT VIEWS?

A) COMMAND: Bible prohibits consumption of alcoholic beverages 1. Total abstinence from all intoxicating drinks as a beverage is demanded from every Christian by the condition of society, the purity of the Church and the Word of God. 3

B) CONSCIENCE: Total Abstinence is preferred, but depends on your conscience about this matter and you should not force it upon another’s conscience 1. Alcohol consumption is not sinful nor to be avoided in all circumstances, but it is generally not the wisest choice. 2. . . . you can't defend teetotalism in any absolute way from the Bible. It's clear that wine is a blessing in the Bible. . . If you make the choice, like me, that I'm going to be a teetotaler, it's just not based on the condemnation of the evil of wine. That's just not it at all! It's the context in which I live. . . (those who support total abstinence) could easily fall into a trap of ruling out for everybody what God has given as a precious gift.4 3. C) CHOICE: Choosing moderate social or recreational drinking is acceptable, only drunkenness is forbidden

Chapter XV Of Repentance Unto Life

1. REPENTANCE unto life is an evangelical grace,1 the doctrine whereof is to be preached by every minister of the gospel, as well as that of faith in Christ.2
