WHY STUDY CHURCH HISTORY

- To give glory to God's providence in His works in the history of man and where the gates of Hell cannot prevail against His Church (Psalm 66, Matt 16:18)

- Learn from the good of the past, discern and reject the errors, and avoid the mistakes

- See the weakness of man and the greatness of God

- Fulfil the Great Commission

CHRISTIANITY BEFORE THE REFORMATION

- Prior to the Protestant Reformation, Christianity was dominated by 2 main churches: Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Church

- Within the church, people with different beliefs always existed through her history

- The Waldensians were persecuted by the Roman Catholic church in the 1100s for their belief in the Bible and preaching – they would eventually join with the Reformed Church after the Protestant Reformation.

- Followers of John Hus were called Bohemian Brethren, later to be joined to the Pietist movement associated with the Lutheran and Mennonite church.

- 1400s Moravian Church started and later to impact also some Baptists and Methodists.

- It was just that the Roman Catholic Church wielded overall control to obey its rule and teachings. Those who refused were often severely persecuted for the Truth.

What are Denominations?

Here are some definitions:

- (Lat. Denomination, from denominare, “to name”) A distinct religious group with particularly held beliefs or practices. Numerous Christian denominations exist throughout the world. 

ie, a group without a denomination = “nameless group”

- A religious organization whose congregations are united in their adherence to its beliefs and practices. 

- A religious group that has slightly different beliefs from other groups that share the same religion.
