"Where is Thy faithfulness?" Something so grim had occurred in Israel that the Psalmist was led to question God’s faithfulness to His covenant with the king. In fact, the Psalmist states in no uncertain terms that God is responsible for the demise of both king and country. Questioning God’s faithfulness is not something the believer wants to readily admit, but most of us have experienced the feeling of abandonment and isolation when everything seems to go wrong.

Psalm 89 begins by praising the faithfulness of our God, and one of the great promises of His faithfulness is that David’s line would be established through all generations. In fact, God goes so far as to say that He has made a covenant with His chosen one, and a covenant cannot be broken by a covenant-keeping God.

There’s an intense feeling of spiritual anguish when the believer feels abandoned by God. Psalm 88 reflects that anguish in what has been called the darkest and gloomiest of Psalms and a psalm filled with one wail of sorrow from beginning to end. But even this darkest of Psalms has a purpose. It reminds us that, despite our faith, our lives are sometimes filled with trouble and—often—there seems to be no end in sight.

The Apostle Paul called himself “the servant of Christ”, but in his day there really were no servants, only slaves.
