How to Correct Without Crushing
Sometimes leadership requires a difficult conversation.
But correction shouldn't be about embarrassing somebody, proving you're right, or showing them who's boss.
It should be about helping somebody get better.
In this episode of The Big Sam Podcast — Leadership for the Rest of Us, Big Sam talks about holding people accountable without tearing them down, correcting the behavior instead of attacking the person, asking questions before making accusations, and giving people a path forward.
Galatians 6 gives us a powerful word for correction: restore.
That's the goal.
Correct the problem. Protect the person. Show them the path forward.
Because if someone walks away knowing exactly what they did wrong but believing they can never do anything right, we probably didn't lead them very well.
Leadership isn’t reserved for managers, executives, or people with impressive titles.
Sometimes the best leader in the building is the guy with grease under his fingernails who shows up, does the job right, helps the people around him, and steps up when something needs to be done.
In this episode of The Big Sam Podcast, we talk about leading from wherever you are, sharing what you know, helping others move forward, and why you don’t need permission to make a difference.
You may never lead a thousand people.
Maybe you’re supposed to impact five.
Those five matter.
Don’t wait for the title. Don’t wait to be recognized.
Start where you are.
Go move the needle.
You don’t need a title, an office, a degree, or a team reporting to you to be a leader.
In this episode of The Big Sam Podcast — Leadership for the Rest of Us, we’re talking about Blue Collar Leadership.
Leadership can look like the guy with grease under his fingernails helping the new employee learn the job. It can be the person who sees a problem and respectfully offers a solution. It can be the person everybody knows they can count on when things get tough.
For years, I sometimes waited to step up because I didn’t think I was “the leader.”
I was wrong.
You don’t need permission to make a difference.
If you can influence one person, help one person improve, solve one problem, or leave something better than you found it, you can lead.

Leadership starts when you decide to make a difference from wherever you are.
Now go move the needle.
The best thing that's ever happened to you is the best thing that's ever happened to you… so far.
Too often, we let comparison rob us of the joy of our own success.
We're looking at somebody else's promotion, money, house, career or accomplishments while forgetting just how blessed we already are.
In this episode of The Big Sam Podcast — Leadership for the Rest of Us, Big Sam talks about celebrating your wins without becoming complacent, controlling what you can control, and continuing to build on the success you've already been given.
Don't let your ice cream melt while you're looking at somebody else's sprinkles.
Be pleased with the 98. Then go after the 100.
Pray like it's all up to God. Work like it's all up to you.
Celebrate where you are—and keep Moving the Needle.
What if the greatest leadership skill isn't confidence, charisma, or intelligence—but humility?
This week on The Big Sam Podcast, Big Sam explores why humility is the foundation of lasting influence. Learn how pride quietly limits growth, why teachable people keep improving, and how serving others creates the kind of leadership people willingly follow.
Whether you're leading a company, a family, a ministry, or simply trying to become a better person, this episode offers practical wisdom and biblical principles you can apply immediately.
Leadership isn't about making yourself look bigger—it's about making the people around you better.
Comfort isn't free.
It can cost us opportunities, growth, relationships, and sometimes even the calling God has placed on our lives.
In this episode of The Big Sam Podcast — Leadership for the Rest of Us, Big Sam explores why meaningful growth almost always requires us to become uncomfortable.
From leadership and relationships to faith and personal growth, sometimes the thing standing between where we are and where we need to be is simply our willingness to take the next uncomfortable step.
Comfort may protect you today, but courage will shape your future.
Listen now to The Cost of Comfort and remember:
Keep moving the needle.
What makes someone truly trustworthy?
It isn't talent. It isn't intelligence. It isn't success.
It's dependability.
In this episode of The Big Sam Podcast, Big Sam shares why being someone others can count on is one of the greatest leadership qualities you can develop. Drawing from decades of leadership experience—and the very personal journey of walking alongside his wife Amy through cancer treatment—he explains how character is built one decision at a time.

Most people can point out what's wrong.
Few people are willing to make it right.
In this episode of The Big Sam Podcast – Leadership for the Rest of Us, Big Sam explores why becoming a problem solver is one of the most valuable habits you can develop in leadership, work, faith, and everyday life.
You'll learn why the people who consistently solve problems become trusted leaders, how small acts of initiative create big opportunities, and why wisdom is knowing that not every problem is yours to solve.
Through practical leadership lessons and biblical insight from Nehemiah, this episode will challenge you to stop asking, "Whose job is this?" and start asking, "How can I help?"
Because the people who move the needle aren't the loudest voices in the room—they're the ones quietly making things better, one problem at a time.
We're taught to chase success.
Work harder.
Earn more.
Climb higher.
Accomplish the next goal.
But what happens when life reminds us that the things we've achieved aren't the things that carry us through?
In this episode of The Big Sam Podcast, Big Sam shares why relationships—not achievements—are life's greatest investment. Drawing from leadership, faith, and personal experience, he explores what difficult seasons reveal about the people who stand beside us and why the greatest legacy you'll ever leave isn't what you accomplish—it's the lives you impact.
You'll discover:
• Why achievement alone never satisfies.
• How great leaders put people before performance.
• The power of simply showing up for others.
• Why your greatest accomplishment will be the people you've helped become better.
Whether you're a leader, a parent, a spouse, a friend, or simply someone trying to live a life that matters, this episode is a reminder to invest in what lasts.
Because when the trophies fade, the titles disappear, and the résumé no longer matters...
People remain.

People matter more than achievement.
Relationships outlast accomplishments.

Grief never completely disappears, but it does change. In the final episode of this four-part series, Big Sam talks about what it means to move forward without forgetting the people, dreams, and chapters we've lost. Healing doesn't mean letting go—it means learning how to carry love, memories, and hope into the future.
