Members Reviews:
Makes me think of Romans 7:21
Short engaging horror story.
Can be read in one sitting, in about a half-an-hour.
Favorite quotes include:
"But my disease grew upon me - for what disease is like Alcohol!" (7)
"But to-morrow I die, and to-day I would unburthen my soul." (2)
"The guilt of my dark deed disturbed me but little. ... I determined to wall it up ... I soundly and tranquilly slept; aye, slept even with the burden of murder upon my soul!" (27, 24)
"Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such? This spirit of perverseness ... Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not?" (10)
This last passage, and indeed the theme of the story, makes me think of some famous Scriptures:
"I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. ... What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!" -Romans 7:21,24,25 (New International Version)
Despite being a tortured soul, as another reviewer points out, Poe is said to have found comfort towards the end of his life by a more forceful embrace of Catholicism.
The Combination Of The Most Perverse Conduct Described By Great Writing
Edgar Allen Poe is a great talent. According to my studies, he may have been a tortured sole. This personal anguish, combined with great talent as a writer produced some of the greatest and most shocking writing of Mr. Poe's time. There may be no better example of this than this short story. I am not sure I would have had the courage to put this story into words if I had been the author.
As a student, not a scholar, of literature, I had always tried to figure out why I like Edgar Allen Poe so much. His style had always seemed unique to me. Then I read "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley". This work precedes that of Poe and really reminds me of Poe so much, that I cannot help but wonder if Edgar Allan Poe may have been inspired in part by Mary Shelley. No one has ever suggested that to me and I have never read that. It is just a feeling that I have.
As far as this audiobook is concerned, the narration is faithful to the short story. The narrator is female. She is excellent. I also have a narration that is done by a male, Bob Thomley. I did find that narration more chilling. Thank You...
