A vigorous storyteller

Hemingway thought Crane was an example to young writers - and I thought that he meant exactly that, because Crane's prose certainly feels youthful: direct, energetic, deep and yet unpretentious. Just a very good storyteller. He died young, only 28, which is an immense pity, because a more mature Crane would be nothing less than legend.

Superb writing!!

I had to read this short story for an American Literature assignment, and was I astonished at the writing style of Crane. Describing the brutalities of the sea and the hardships of these four men is a true gift of this writer. I highly recommend!

Read if you want to be moved

I had to read this book for my Transatlantic Literature course and I am amazed at Crane's ability to use nature as not only a backdrop but the antagonist of the story. Love love love and highly recommend.

Real writing

I read in many different genres and when I read wonderfully written works, almost always written decades ago, the poor diction, grammar and editing in current writing is remarkable.

The Open Boat is wonderfully written.

Lifeboat

A great survival at sea story. Crane himself tells about being w three others in a dinghy off the coast of Florida after their vessel, a steamboat, sinks. There's no exposition or background on anyone. It's very post-modern. Highly recommended.

Mike Bennett truly captures the mysterious character of Poe but also describes the various scenes in such a detailed fashion that you could not help but chuckle. The Narrator, the sound effects were awesome!

Mike Bennett's re-imagining of Edgar Allen Poe is rip crackingly amusing. Poe is channeled through Bennett's devious creative mind, fashioning a ribald, rascally and irreverent alternate Poe Universe in which outlandishly large noses, chemical dependency and lunacy are ciphers for his wickedly keen satirical sensibility. Delivered with a wonderfully fruity plum in the mouth and a wan wink in the jaundiced eye, Bennett masters a beautiful array of character voices whilst Gothic strings and acidic sonic FX wrap you up in a very engaging 40 plus minutes of warped joy. These stories will make your heart sing! So sweet and touching. She really knows how to weave a beautiful story with family and charity at the heart of all that is most important. Perfect to read to your young children as a treat on a holiday, for most of these have to do with holidays.

CLASSIC BOOKS ARE GREAT

I loved reading Louisa May Alcott books as a young girl and was happy to give these books as a gift to my granddaughter. She says she really enjoys reading and loves these books as much as I did so many years ago.

Delightful Christmas Stories

This book is actually a compilation of 3 short stories by Louisa May Alcott. The first story of the book is called "Kate's Choice", and it was my favorite story of the book. It is about a young girl from England who has come to stay with relatives in America. She has all her aunts & uncles on their toes as they wait to hear about a certain life-changing decision that she must make. Not only does she make a surprising choice, but she also plans a very merry Christmas secret.

"What Love Can Do" is the second story. It features 2 sisters who share their quaint Christmas wishes with each other. Each of them wish they had a bit more money to spend on gifts for their family.

What awaits them on their doorstep on Christmas morning?

The last story is entitled "Gwen's Adventure in the Snow". It shows the great courage of little boys & girls who get caught in a snowstorm during a fun sleigh ride.

Each of these stories have their own unique personality. The characters within the pages of this book show excellent qualities and virtues, just like all of Louisa May Alcott's writings. I have a very high recommendation for this book.
