Not a good story book for children
Iâve always loved different renditions of this story, but had never read the original. I bought for my kids for Christmas. This was a difficult book to read out loud for kids. The language and writing are definitely not of this age. I donât reccomend if youâre buying for children, but a nice book for a collection or something.
A story of love and want.
I love O'Henrys writing. If only I could tell a story so succinctly! The emotion of each character is laid out very simply yet clearly. That's what this story is about, emotion.
    Heartwarming
We all know the story. 2 people in love without a penny doing a selfless act for each other at Christmas time. It's a must along with the Christmas Carol by Dickens.
A good reminder what is really important
A good quick story. Sometimes we forget about what is really important in this life. This is a good reminder of that.
    Beautiful short read
You can read this in about 15 minutes. It's a beautiful story of sacrificial love. it's a free ebook! It's an excellent read.

    Painful Listening ZERO star Performance
What disappointed you about Fantastic Tales?
The narrator delivers every sentence... In a relentless Captain Kirk-meets-sensationalist local newscaster style that is impossible to tolerate more than 5 minutes.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Couldn't say. I think the reason that no one has reviewed this audiobook is because they immediately returned it.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cathy Dobson?
Anyone. I would rather listen to 20+ hours of leaf blowers and barking Chihuahuas than another Cathy Dobson narration.
    Any additional comments?
Audible, please rerecord these and other classics with a different narrator.

Classic horror by a master. Written in a style not very popular these days, but should be enjoyed for its ability to ramp emotions up into a edge of your seat fear.

in his stories - one of my favorites !
    Well written
Much alike Poe or Stephen King, a building suspense and a vividly built world through the eyes of the protagonist

... reading a lot of Lovecraft at once is a bad thing. Not because of a creeping dread
I think that reading a lot of Lovecraft at once is a bad thing. Not because of a creeping dread, but because they're all so similar! The only thing that stands out in this story, for me, is the focus on a particular family and their connection to the horror.
Really, my attention faded in and out while listening to this story. It's a lot of mood description of the environment, interspersed with a little action. It feels almost like Lovecraft was being paid per word and rent was due.
Surely Lovecraft fans will disagree, but this is one of those stories of his that fall into the "read one, read them all" category.
This story is in the public domain, and is available in multiple free formats. I listened to the free audio production produced by the Drabblecast.

  • Precipitous Tales Audiobook by H. P. Lovecraft

    Title: Precipitous Tales
    Author: H. P. Lovecraft
    Narrator: Neil Hellegers
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-25-16
    Publisher: Spoken Realms
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Classics, American Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Taken together, the works of H. P. Lovecraft create a terrific world of elder gods, ancient aliens, and cosmic horror. This new original collection of Lovecraft's earliest stories lays the foundation for that world and prefigures many of his later infamous tales.
In "The Nameless City", an intrepid explorer encounters a shunned, crumbling city in the desert, older than the earliest known of humankind but perhaps not as abandoned as was thought. In "The Tomb", a young man's lifelong obsession with the locked crypt of an ill-fated, extinct family slowly turns to madness...or possession. In "Dagon", a sailor adrift in the Pacific Ocean awakes to discover himself stranded on the risen sea floor...and the abomination that has risen along with those ancient depths. And in "The Music of Erich Zann", a destitute university student is entranced by the mysterious and alluring music of the old, mute viol player who lives in the apartment above - until he finds the music serves a dark, urgent purpose.
Please enjoy the stories of these four unfortunate souls as they enter the eldritch universe of H. P. Lovecraft.
Table of contents: "The Nameless City"; "The Tomb"; "Dagon"; "The Music of Erich Zann".

Best Rendition of Lovecraft Stories I've Found Yet
Have you listened to any of Neil Matthew Hellegerss other performances before? How does this one compare?
I'm a fan of Hellegers' work. I've listened to a few of his audio books. This was my favorite of his productions--uniquely suited to his voice.
    Any additional comments?
These are some of Lovecraft's best. Dagon in particular has always been a favorite. As has The Tomb. Hellegers voice is deep, soulful and stirring. I found myself enraptured. The narrator went away and I was encapsulated in the story, my own petty life a mere memory compared to the compelling narrative. The price for this small collection can't be beat. I wish Hellegers would do an audio rendition of all of the stories in the entire Cthulhu Mythos. Dagon has just a hint of that story. There is so much more and his voice would certainly do it justice. Helleger's performance of The Tomb was the most compelling of all four stories for me. Such a beautiful story, fantastically told.
true horror fans will not be disappointed
Im sure that everyone who lays claim to being a true fan of horror has read Lovecraft, described as the father of weird and wonderful horror by The Guardian he was known to have regularly corresponded with, and I can imagine influenced, writers like Robert Bloch (author of Psycho), Henry Kuttner (The Dark World), Robert E Howard (Conan the Barbarian).
Precipitous Tales is a collection of four short stories by Lovecraft, together they embody the characteristic medley of horror and science fiction that he is so famous for and reveal just how much of 21st century literature, if not exactly pastiche, is influenced by Lovecrafts work. In The Tomb and The Music of Erich Zann, both exemplifying everything I loved about the TV series The Twilight Zone, take place in seemingly ordinary fictional worlds filled with inexplicable mysteries but none is so strange as what the lost sailor of Dagon finds at the bottom of the sea.
