    Bargain Price Solomon Kane
All ten of the finished Solomon Kane stories plus a couple of poems as an Appendix. British publisher Wordsworth (I am quite familiar with Wordsworth editions)is known for quality products with bargain prices. Recommended.
    A real person
I'm a fan of Howard, but had never read the Kane books. Solomon Kane is a very interesting character, and I love how Howard describes his actions. You can really feel that Kane, like Conan, was a real person telling his experiences to Howard.
violent stories, but as a Conan fan it's what I was expecting.

    Good enough.
Well the story was nice but kinda lack luster. I liked the writing style though. I'll try more by this author, maybe something longer.
    Enticing and unexpected
    H. P. Lovecraft wrote a very interesting story that seemed to pull me in. Although it was a bit shorter than expected, it is worth the ninety nine cents. If you are interested in an intellectual writing style and stories with unexpected endings, than I believe you will enjoy Lovecraft's work.

    Cat Haters Beware
"It is said that in Ulthar, which lies beyond the river Skai, no man may kill a cat; and this I can verily believe as I gaze upon him who sitteth purring before the fire. For the cat is cryptic, and close to strange things which man cannot see."
Once upon a time in Ulthar, before said law was put into action, there lived a sinister old couple who delighting in slaying any unlikely cat that straggled upon their property. This is a tale about two despicable, horrible, awful people who get exactly what is coming to them. I hated them but loved this creepy, atmospheric tale of revenge.
    Rethink your cover art choice
Well..this story is in the public domain and free online. No worries, I like reprints too. However I am agog regarding the idea that two lions having sex is the 'hook' to sell a Lovecraft story about housecats.

Dagon is the story of a shipwrecked sailor who comes face to face with an ancient and terrible sea god, Dagon. So horrifying is his ordeal that he spends the rest of his life trying to escape the awful clutches of Dagon. In the end there is only one way out.

    Eh
So the cover of this is pretty neat. But all it is really, is a copy/paste from the internet with Lovecraft's bio copied from Wikipedia, no less. If you have an internet connection, all of Lovecraft's works can be read online for free. If you really need the paper format, Penguin presses a collection of his stories in one book.
    early draft?
Having already read "Call of Cthulhu," it's easy to see that this story, "Dagon," is an earlier iteration of Lovecraft's most famous story. In many ways, "Dagon" reads as an early draft, just an early draft that ended up published. Clearly, this idea of a massive body of land rising from the depths of the ocean floor was not one Lovecraft could get out of his mind.
Even with the similarities, there are things about this earlier story that I think work better. "Dagon" is about a man lost at sea. He's drifting alone in a little boat in the middle of the ocean and certain that he's going to die. Upon waking one day, he finds that his boat is no longer drifting but has struck land. Except that it hasn't "struck" land, because, when he sits up and looks around, he finds that the land has risen up under him and his boat is stranded, land bound.
Lovecraft's description of the risen continent is exquisitely detailed with sensory information. The smell of rotting fish and other sea... things... that are equally stranded upon the new rocky plain. The lack of anything to block out the sun. The desolate waste of the sea floor suddenly exposed to light. And our lone man tramping across it to find out if there's any way off.
Of course, in true Lovecraft style, all of this is told in flashback style to explain why the man feels as if his death is imminent. And this is the part of the story that doesn't work for me. While the part on the island is interesting in its landscape and the thing that happens, once he escapes, there is no reason given within the story that there should be anything to worry about after.
I understand that the tension in the story is the man's fear about dying because of what he saw, but doesn't ring true. Especially so considering what happens at the very end. How does it relate to the rest of the story?
It's an interesting story, and the part with the risen continent is well worth the read, but I wasn't impressed with the story overall. I think there could have been much more tension without it being done as a flashback.

It has always been the prerogative of genius to batter on the portals of the Unknowable - and then thrust his soul into the crack, like the little Dutch boy, to keep the devil out. The satanic legends surrounding the unbelievable career of the great concertist Paganini leave little doubt that somewhere there is a window such as Erich Zann's, beyond which lies a world more terrible than imagination can grasp, where science dwindles to zero and incredible passions rage as winds in a vacuum. Where? Why, on the Rue d'Auseil - which one visits twice.

Well, it's spooky, mysterious and kooky, but it is absolutely Lovecraft. It leaves one wondering what was in that room...?
Good, but not the recommended first Lovecraft story for beginners
It's hard for me to give all of the works of Lovecraft a high rating, as they often share the same general structure and theme, as with this tale. Man confronts the horrors of the universe and goes a bit mad. In this instance, he experiences true terror while looking out the window of a musician who has also been driven mad by his apartment view.
If you read this story first of Lovecraft's works, you'll probably be very neutral on the author. Opt for stories like "Dagon," instead.
This story is in the public domain, so you can check them out for free in multiple formats. I opted for the free audio production available from the Drabblecast.

How could you not enjoy another Zane Grey book
Zane Grey is prolific. He has the ability to put you there with his vivid descriptions. I have not been to the north rim of the Grand Canyon until I read this book. The characters, mainly Mormons, who save the life of a young lunger. The family also has a half Navajo woman they raised. a worthless son who goes against his family and and assortment of rustlers with a couple of these guys who still have some morals. It is the usual story of greed. There is a wild stallion, a part wolf dog and a droopy eared burro who contribute to the story.. The Navajos are portrayed in a positive way and good since I have enjoyed interacting with them in the past. Overall it is a good read.
    another rich desert classic
Yes, Zane Gray had a formula that many of his books follow. But his love of the west and understanding of it's essence shines through. The intelligence insight and beauty of his descriptions alone are worth the reading. Just as the same sun and moon can always provide new inspiration his novels always bring me back to the desert west and it's vastness. Recommended.
    As expected from Zane
Nothing but the best of western tales could come from the pen of Zane Grey. He was a master of the western genre and his glory days of western life is told here. If you're a fan of the western genre have a look at anthonydunphyfineart.com and you can see them all in their element.
Not exactly up to modern standards as a good book. I'm skipping over a lot of descriptions ...
Reading this because I'm reading the biography of Zane Grey. Not exactly up to modern standards as a good book. I'm skipping over a lot of descriptions and boggling over the "period" cultural depictions.
    I've always loved Zane Gray
I read this book the first time 60 yrs ago. This is probably the third or fourth time and I still love Zane Gray's way of describing my Arizona.

    Gothic brilliance wonderfully narrated.
I don't usually write reviews but this was truly excellent. Poe's brilliance is wonderfully portrayed by Christopher Perkin who has the gravitas and tone to pull off this superb rendition of the great man's work. In particular The Raven absolutely gripped me. For me this is the best audible book experience so far.
    Great classic gothic horror!
Would you listen to Tales of Mystery & Imagination again? Why?
Yes, yes, a million times - yes!
    Any additional comments?
Poe just knows how to press my buttons! Creepy, classic gothic horror at its best! The narration adds to the feel of the audio too. Well read.

    Publisher's Summary:
A comic short story told in the first person by the first woman in the biblical creation story, Eve. Written in diary-entry style from creation to burial, the story was first published in the 1905 Christmas edition of Harper's Bazaar. Many believe it may have been written as a posthumous love-letter to Mark Twain's wife, Olivia Langdon Clemens, or Livy, who died in June 1904, just before the story was written.
    Members Reviews:
    Very Touching
This is the companion to Extracts from Adam's Diary. Although the tone of this story is quite different that Adam's Diary in that it is not overtly humorous, it is still a worthwhile read. The two stories together poke fun at the differences between the sexes. This one, being from the female perspective, is a little more introspective and emotional, but nonetheless still humorous when comparing how the two genders completely misinterpret each others actions and can witness the same event and come up with two different versions of what happened. Yet despite these seemingly irreconcilable differences, the two still come to love and depend on each other.
I do recommend reading Adam's Diary first, otherwise the end of Eve's Diary has little meaning. I actually teared up on reading it.
    A Fun Short Story
Mark Twain was a great author and had a unique way of looking at the world. He brought that uniqueness to his stories, of which this is only one. Written in the same first-person style as Letters from the Earth, it is fun to read and speculate if the story were close to being true. My only issue is that it ends too quickly.
Eve's Diary: Mark Twain's tiny masterpiece, banned no longer
Only someone with such a splendid sense of humor and a joy for life as Mark Twain could have pulled this off... but there's a story behind the story, and another one beyond that, so read on.
Eve's Diaryis an entertaining, truly delightful piece written in the style of a diary kept by the first woman, Eve. This Kindle version has all of the illustrations that were done by Lester Ralph. Originally published in the 1905 Christmas issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine, it was popular enough to be subsequently published in book format in June 1906 by the Harper & Brothers publishing house. You'll see the red cover of that first edition posted by this reviewer in the images here.
Mark Twain was 70 at the time of the initial publication of this story, and his works in his later years were inclined to be somewhat critical and even vitriolic. But this little story was warm, heartfelt, and emotional. He had suffered the loss of his much-loved wife Livy in 1904, and it's clear that he had reflected on his married existence in Eve's Diary as his own private Eden with Livy. Through his words we see the `first woman' to be more open, candid and seemingly smarter than her companion, and his life was all the better for her being there.
Mark Twain wrote the story in the style of a diary kept by Eve, the first woman in the Judeo-Christian creation. It's claimed by the author to have been "translated from the original MS." The storyline of Twain's novel is the first-person account of Eve from her creation up to her burial by her mate, Adam, including meeting and getting to know him, and exploring the world around her, the Garden of Eden.
