Editorial Reviews:
Master storyteller Edgar Allan Poe presents one of his most disturbing tales in "The Black Cat". After the unstable narrator gouges out his cat's eye in a flash of rage, he is filled with remorse, which soon turns back to wrath. The narrator hangs his cat from a tree, but this is not the last the narrator will hear from his wronged pet.... John Chatty has a voice ideally suited to Edgar Allan Poe's doom-and-gloom tone. Chatty's deep voice emerges as if from within an echoing cave. With hypnotic pacing and flawless diction, Chatty ensures that Poe's words are as haunting as any ever said.

THE BLACK CAT
I loved this book ! It was by Booksurge.com and well-printed and easy to read. But I was especially impressed by the service of Amazon. I received the book in two days and was advised all along the way: when it was shipped, the tracking of it, and e mails advising me of all details. Excellent, Amazon! I am a dedicated customer.
It was a gift to someone
I doubt that she has read it yet. She said she didn't have any books by Poe so she wanted to try one.
Classic...
I purchased three of these stories as downloads for a personal reading of Edgar Allen Poe. Poe's stories are short and easily read, but are chilling and mysterious as well. Perfect for Halloween...
Just what son-in-law wanted.
Son-in-law asked for this "book" for Christmas. It was more like a "pamphlet" ... very thin and cover very thin. I would have liked the cover/binding to be thicker and sturdier, but it was exactly what my son-in-law wanted, so I am happy with it.
This classic is great, disturbing and wonderful
The Black Cat, published in 1845, is a typically great gripping short horror tale by the master of horror, Edgar Allan Poe. It is about a man, a drunk, who loved a black cat, which loved him. The man committed a couple of terrible acts, I will mention the first, which is not the worst. What followed cannot be explained by logic.
In a drunken stupor, the man cut out the eye of the black cat, but unsatisfied with this deed, he hung the cat and killed it. Soon thereafter, his house caught fire and he lost all his wealth. Only one wall of his house remained. On it in bas-relief, inexplicably, was the figure of a cat with a rope around its neck.
Then another cat came to him. It looked like the cat he killed, except that it was not entirely black like the cat he killed. It also had lost one eye. It had a white splotch on its head. At first he liked this cat as he had liked the cat he killed at first. But then he saw that the white splotch looked like a gallow, and he loathed the cat and wanted to kill it as he had killed the first catâ.
Several horrors and murder follow. Readers may want to compare this tale with Poeâs âThe Tell-Tale Heart.â
