Black Men Abroad is a special episode of the Black Expat Experience live show and podcast. The mission of the series and this episode is to provide Black expats of the diaspora a constructive platform to share the genesis of their journeys abroad, share how they make their mental health a priority, and share how they impact their communities.

-A native of Washington State, Dr. Raphael X. Moffett began his career in higher education and motivational speaking at Clark Atlanta University in 2002. He was inspired by working with college students and made the decision to pursue a career in student affairs. During the past 20 years, he has gained valuable experience serving in progressive leadership roles at Clark Atlanta University, Georgia State University, Morehouse College, and Trinity University. Known as a leader that motivates people to succeed, Dr. Moffett has also served in senior leadership positions as the Vice President for Student Services at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas and the Vice President for Student Affairs at Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma, and Dean of Students at Duke Kunshan University in Kunshan, China. Currently, Dr. Moffett serves as the Chief Student Affairs Officer at Schwarzman Scholars located at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. In this role, he strives to create and promote a community that supports the holistic success of students both inside and outside of the classroom.  

Dr. Moffett is a visionary that is committed to enhancing the quality of life for others by providing them with skills and tools needed to succeed. He is known in higher education as being a servant leader who is personable, goal oriented, and values driven. Dr. Moffett focuses on providing all of his constituents with effective services and unique developmental opportunities with the intent to help them maximize their potential. His philosophy is that every person has the ability to achieve professional success and personal growth with the proper guidance and support.

Dr. Moffett also is the President and Founder of Inspire YOUniversity, LLC, a consultancy supporting universities, sports teams, corporations, faith-based organizations, and non-profit organizations to become the best versions of themselves. He specializes in motivational speaking, executive coaching, team building, professional skill development, cultural competence training, and leadership development. His goal is to help participants grow their capacity to succeed and live fulfilling professional and personal lives. He has keynoted and/or consulted for several organizations including but not limited to Sam’s Club, Harvard University, Texas A&M University, University of Central Oklahoma, Marshall University, University of West Georgia, Langston University Men's Basketball, Clark Atlanta University, Executive Women International, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Dr. Moffett received his Bachelor’s degree in English from Washington State University in 2002. He earned his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Clark Atlanta University in 2004 and earned his doctorate from Clark Atlanta University in 2008. In his leisure time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, visiting family, reading, watching and playing basketball, calligraphy, music production, trying new restaurants, and traveling.

Born and raised in Barbados, Jevon always loved his vibrant culture and the small island he calls home. Growing up, his parents instilled in him the importance of traveling the world to experience new cultures and to see that there is life beyond the shores of Barbados. "The world is your oyster" his mother would always say, which led to him leaving home at 18 years old to study his bachelors in Jamaica.   

Wanting to live in a country beyond the Caribbean, he decided in 2019, in order to challenge himself some more, that he would move to the furthest place that he could think of which was China. As Asian culture was one of the few cultures he'd never experience first hand, this was an amazing opportunity for him to learn Asian customs and to grow as a person.   

3 years later, he still enjoys his time in China and looks forward to all that the future has in store for him here." He's currently working as a Mobile Game Narrative Designer.

An artist, writer, and educator whose perspective on “the female experience” has been distinctly molded by her upbringing, Ms. Gina P. Nelson is the Founder and Chief Creative Director of Bella and Bella Productions, a platform (launching on March 8, 2022) dedicated to uplifting, inspiring and empowering young girls and women.   

As one of ten children (and one of two girls) born to Guyanese, South American parents, Ms. Nelson understands the importance of building and nurturing a strong community of women. She is a champion of female empowerment and ultimately hopes that the Bella and Bella platform serves as the space where meaningful dialogue is exchanged,  team collaboration is fostered, risk-taking is encouraged and dreams are nurtured.  

Ms. Nelson holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in Education from New York University. Her educational background spans the fields of grant writing, curriculum & assessment development, leadership capacity building, and school improvement planning.    An accomplished writer and artist, her artwork has been featured in both group and solos shows in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and her personal narrative writings were recently published in a Women’s Anthology titled “Our Voices: Our Stories: Advancing, Celebrating, Embracing and Empowering Girls and Women of Color”.  An avid traveler and purveyor of other cultures who has sojourned to 54 countries across five continents,  Ms. Nelson believes in the generative power of storytelling to connect people with each other and the world.  

Ms. Nelson currently resides in the UAE, where she founded the Diving for Pearls Podcast, a podcast about female thought leaders, innovators and visionaries making transformative inroads in the region. Additionally, she serves as the Deputy Cluster Manager for approximately 100 public schools in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.   Ms. Nelson lives by the quote, Put the excuses in the bin."

Born in Washington, D.C., Uriah is a Master Cosmetologist and the creator and founder of JustSkin, a natural skincare line made with organic and high quality ingredients.  Shortly after moving to China, Uriah realized that there was a lack of recognizable and available skincare products, especially those without the possibility of having whitening agents in them. For years, she made products only for herself and gifted them for birthdays or as tokens of appreciation.   After recognizing that there was a high demand for great skincare products, Uriah decided that she would share the goodness of her products with everyone. Using her professional expertise, she formulates her handmade products in Beijing. The products are great for anyone who wants to explore and cultivate a healthy skincare regimen.  

Uriah also serves as an educator at an international school in Beijing.  In her own words, "It's most rewarding to show up as your full, authentic self."

Born in Washington, DC and raised in Waldorf, Maryland, Stephon has spent the last year living and working in China. For years, Stephon worked as a Professional Stunt Performer for film and live theatrical shows, and now he is a precision driver, living and working in Qinghuangdao China.
