We’re about to discover the most extreme inequality we’ve ever imagined, all thanks to a root cause: lack of privacy and ownerless data, which are leading us to three fundamental problems: the disease, the immediate consequence and the existential crisis.

When they ask us to share our data, some say that it’s anonymous, but that’s technically impossible. We can discuss whether that’s true or not, but the point is that we only know about the upside. But we’ve got no idea of the long tail of dangers sharing your “anonymous data” implies.

Privacy inequality is the difference among individuals in society where privacy is the source of economic, opportunity and democratic inequalities, but unlike any other inequality, this one goes to the extremes. We haven’t seen this in its pure form, but it’s going to hit us hard. And no one is talking about it. No one.

How can we get people to care about their data? There’s a chasm we need to cross, and the only way to get people on board is to give them products that work, but not in the way you think.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, gave a keynote speech in the European parliament “defending” privacy. It was a great presentation, but it was just words. Their actions prove something different. They’re taking over the healthcare industry and securing their position in the biodata war.

The privacy problem is a tough one, but not in the way we think. It turns out we’re focusing on the wrong solutions. Awareness is the key.
