As the novel closes, loose ends become looser. Paul Brody is buried and the students get half a day off. Coffin and Abraham visit Susan with the bad news about her sister. She reacts appropriately. Finally, Brian comes to Henry for advice about his wife and Ciffin shrugs. Good times.
Coffin faces two more deaths, but with two accomplices
In this section, the threads begin to assemble. Coffin has figured out how Brian got poisoned, but not who did it. On the other hand, he also knows about Caroline’s death, but then two more deaths occur, both by heroin and both helped along.
Brian Swain, father of two and realtor extraordinaire, overdoses over the Captain Crunch. His father takes the opportunity to take the office back. Henry believes that Brian was poisoned. But he isn’t sure who did it?
Pidge has left for Boston, in the hope of leaving all of the island. its' families, and its' men behind. Unfortunately, one of the men chooses to follow her. This gesture does not have the result he hoped for. In the end, she returns to the island, to her fiancé, and his children.

As Part III begins, the pacifist tries to stop three armed men from burning the boat down. Luckily, Danny has a gun and likes to use it. The boat and the girls survive, but Coffin is beaten and has to spend time in the hospital. Danny discusses the limits of pacifism. Pidge, tired of two men and the island, escapes to Boston.
Henry Coffin has found a new way to mess with people. Henry and Danny wait on a different road for drunks, and, sure enough, find one soon enough. He calls Pink to come and take the drunk home. It gives Henry a moment to suggest a mother path to the Cabbie, which he doesn't take. later, the state police stop Henry and Danny to correct him, to inform him the Caroline was an informant, and to let slip that she was dead. Pidge wakes up in the middle of the same night to discover that her new boyfriend is passed out on medical grade heroin. She throws herself a life line and drives away.
In this section, Coffin and Danny save a life that not many wanted saving. Then, they finally find Tobias and he gives them their first break and a connection to Paul Brody. Pidge is with Brody now, and has been given a gift she may not have wanted, but appreciates.
Coffin traps one of Cam Christmas’ guests on the Milestone Road, then shows him the pictures. The next day a lawyer comes in to the police station to threaten and cajole. Coffin has some questions that get answered by Cam Christmas himself on the next day. A promising lead fizzles out.
Now, that Coffin has seen the pictures, he wants to confront Cam Christmam but his partner, after having heard the warnings from the chief won't go. Instead, they visit Meaghan Ingersoll's grieving mother. Finally, on the next night, Coffin surveilles the party.
