Mississippi State lost all four games last week. The season is reaching a difficult end. This was not what anyone expected in a title defense season, but it is what we have.
Mississippi State wanted to be playing meaningful baseball in May. In some respects they are as they try to make the field at Hoover, but not on a national level. What should we expect this weekend?
Mississippi State's long season simply keeps getting longer. The Bulldogs lost to Samford in the Hoover Met by a score of 8-6. It was a low point in what has proven to be a season with several less than happy moments.
Mississippi State had a chance to move into the top half of the league standings this past weekend. Now, the Bulldogs are dead last in the west and sweating out a spot in Hoover.
Mississippi State has to have a winning weekend. In fact, the Bulldogs need a sweep if they can get one. It won't be easy, but it is certainly possible.
The Bulldog backs are against the wall if they have any hope of making the NCAA tournament.
A lot has been made about the make-up of the Mississippi State national championship team. Some critics have suggested that Coach Chris Lemonis simply inherited a championship team. That is simply not true. I explain on today's show.
Mississippi State had little in the way of margin for error. With a series loss to Mizzou, State is now pretty much back to the wall the rest of the season. Sure, State can make Hoover and maybe the NCAA tournament with some luck. The latter of those two post season tournaments seems to be a long shot now.
Mississippi State has twelve SEC games left. The Bulldogs need to win at least six of those contests to give themselves a realistic chance of making an NCAA regional.
Looking at the numbers, State will have to play their best baseball this weekend to have any hope of sweeping those three games. Just winning the season will simply be the bare minimum. State needs all three considering who they have left.
Ole Miss won the Governor's game for the first time since 2015 last evening. It was an important win for them. It would have been an important win for State had that been able to pull it off. Yes, State won the weekend series, which means more. That said, every win at this point is important. State can ill afford to let any slip.
Now the Bulldogs take the show on the road for a road trip to Missouri. The Tigers surprised the Bulldogs by taking two in Starkville last season. The Bulldog simply have to win this series.
