This evening we present the second of a three-part series on the Book of Yona, which we read on Yom Kippur afternoon. This short, famous, fantastic story of Jonah and the whale expresses every theme of the High Holidays. Tonight we consider why the setting for Yona's banishment is specifically the belly of a whale, and what this teaches us about the meaning and process of Teshuvah (poorly translated as repentance). We explore the path Yona takes to achieve the transformation he undergoes, and how we follow that same path. And we examine the reach of that path, applying that to each of us directly. From this session emerges several of the primary themes of this work, and why it is central not only to Yom Kippur, bu the entire High Holiday experience.
