Breaking up is hard to do. Or, is it? I am known for breaking up with books often. If it no longer suits me, and I do not want to spend time with the characters, then I am OUTTA HERE. There are so many other books to read and a book has to earn the right to be finished. These ones did not make the cut. Not sorry. Onto books that I can eagerly recommend!

It is no surprise that I have some contrary ideas about romance novels. I love a good romance, after all, I've been feasting on romcoms & romance novels for the past 40+ years, and I have seen how the world has changed in its acceptance of romance novels in popular culture. There is a difference between smut and romance, and I am happy to sit down with two romance readers today to talk about what they love about the genre and what critiques they have about tropes, book boyfriends, and steamy scenes. Michelle and Vanessa are regulars around the bookshop, and it is a genuine delight to spend time with them. I knew their bookish relationship would be one that you'd enjoy too, so I was eager to invite them onto the pod. Enjoy this convo, and don't worry, I will have more in future episodes about strong opinions about the genre... I hold nothing back. ;-)

When I started with the booktruck, I could never have dreamed that we would have as many fun bookish in-store events, or host such incredible authors as we have already done. Last autumn, we had the pleasure of welcoming NY Times Bestselling Author TJ Klune to our bookshop for a 100 person ticketed event to promote his newest book, "Somewhere Beyond the Sea". Ours was the only independent bookstore in all of Canada that he visited (and he only visited 3 cities in the country), and we were blown away by the whole privileged experience. We continue to raise the bar for events and have noticed that other stores are paying attention and have begun to do similar things. As always, we delight in being innovative and setting a new standard for what readers can expect form indies.

We are all doing the best we can to check items off our lists and still be SANE. I get it. Running 2 bookstores and trying to have a vibrant life that supports that requires a lot of saying NO to people, which I am totally fine with, by the way. I hope some of this info helps and gives you permission to retreat and READ because it just makes you a better human.
