If the GOP wins the midterms, Donald Trump proposes a $5,000 adult stimulus totaling $1.35 trillion, arriving as the US adds 162,000 jobs in August with 4.1% unemployment.
Trump told a Republican convention in Dallas that every American adult would get a $5,000 "dividend" if Republicans hold both chambers of Congress in November. Nobody's calling it what it is out loud, but the condition attached makes it hard to read as anything other than a bribe.
Apple held its first product event under new CEO John Ternus and unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable, starting around $2,000, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. AI had a genuinely strange week in mathematics: Claude produced the first complete computer-checked formalization of Fermat's Last Theorem after running largely on its own for 11 days, and OpenAI claimed an internal system proposed a solution to the Navier-Stokes problem that has sat open for 90 years, though it also kicked off a research-ethics dispute. And Iran's Revolutionary Guard captured a US Anduril underwater drone at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz.
Plus a stronger-than-expected jobs report ahead of the Fed's September meeting, Europe's first private rocket reaching orbit, Meta's new agent that shops on your behalf, an Anthropic researcher quitting and accusing AI labs of gambling with our lives, and the biggest funding rounds of the week including Mistral at $3.5 billion and The Boring Company at $3 billion.
