Welcome to the first edition of The Bottom Line on KCLR for 2020!
 
In the run up to Christmas on The Bottom Line on KCLR we spoke to a number of people involved in #careerskilkenny, the event was designed to bring together people at Christmas who may be living away from home and who are interested in a job in Kilkenny. The event took place on December 28th in the Medieval Mile Museum in Kilkenny and over 1000 people came along to meet the over 20 leading local companies that were taking part.
 
 To get first-hand feedback from one of the companies involved, John Purcell spoke with Padraic Tracey, HR Specialist with the Asgard Group about their experience at #careerskilkenny as well as to provide us with further insight into what the Asgard Group does.
 
 Starting into the New Year many people in business turn to the challenges for the year ahead, with that in mind, John spoke with Wexford based business consultant Blaise Brosnan who works with many successful companies in Carlow & Kilkenny and who is credited with making a real difference to the lives of many entrepreneurs in terms of assisting clarity of purpose, focus and progress. 
 
Climate change continues to be topical and is an area where businesses are constantly evolving to become more environmentally friendly and operate in a sustainable way. This week John spoke with Michael Connolly of local business Connolly’s Supervalu in Bagenalstown who are investing in a series of store energy upgrades all as part of their efforts to reduce harmful impacts on the environment.

Jim Power economist speaks with John Purcell on his overall impressions of the global economy during 2019, he discusses the economies over the past year, growth & inflation, Brexit,  as well as Donald Trump and his ongoing trade dispute with China.  We hear what his thoughts are on the economy for 2020.

On this week’s episode of The Bottom Line on KCLR, John Purcell spoke with Walter Bradley, Director, of Dale Carnegie Training Ireland. In 1936 a book called “How to Win Friends and Influence People” was published and quickly became a sensation being reprinted 17 times in its first year. The book was by a man called Dale Carnegie and his book is ranked by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential books of all time.
 
Walter speaks to John about the history and the principles behind Dale Carnegie approach as well as the work that he does with businesses and what the Dale Carnegie Training can offer.
 
Earlier in the week John was in attendance at the Bank Of Ireland Enterprise Town Awards that took place in Lyrath. The good news is that Kilkenny and Carlow did outstandingly well with awards for Kilkenny City, Callan, Borris, Bagnealstown and Carlow Town with the overall top prize being scooped by Kilkenny City which was named as Ireland's Enterprise Town. While there John spoke with a number of those who were involved in making Carlow & Kilkenny's fantastic performance happen.
 
 This week we hear the latest update on #careerskilkenny from Fiona Deegan, Director of Enterprise with Local Enterprise Office Kilkenny and from John Duggan CEO of LoanITT. Fiona brings us the latest update on the number of companies involved as well as the number of jobs on offer. While John gives us an insight into his company and the jobs that they will have on offer at #careerskilkenny.

This weekend Subtitle the Film Festival will be in full swing throughout Kilkenny, and John met with Richard Cook the man behind Subtitle as well as Cat Laughs and Kilkenomics, he spoke about the business behind festivals as well as about his career throughout the years.

Family businesses are a huge building block of Irish life and the economy and it is fitting that the Kilkenny Chamber Awards recognised this with an awards category focused on Kilkenny’s finest family businesses. This year the nominees were Quinn and Sons Tyres and Auto; Gittens Murray Architects and Johnson Funeral Directors. Earlier this week John spoke with Sammy Johnston of Johnston Funeral Directors who won the Family Business of the Year award, about his families business and what the award means to them.
 
Lily Holmes MD of PB Machine Tech Ltd. in Carlow came into studio this week to speak with John about the history behind the company and her path to becoming MD of PB Machine Tech. Lily also spoke with John about being one of 8 shortlisted in the International Business Category and one of only 24 entrepreneurs chosen over all for this year’s EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award which was held in CityWest in Dublin and broadcast on TV on Thursday night.

John spoke with Stephen on how business has been since their opening over two months ago and their plans to continue to promote the business, we also hear about the experience and the atmosphere that awaits customers when they visit the store.
 
Gary Evans and Jane Kavanagh are familiar faces on the business scene and have garnered many awards for their innovative approach to business, Feedalpha a social media management company is their latest venture. Earlier this week John spoke with Gary about what their company Feedalpha does, how it came about and their plans for expansion. Gary also spoke to John about their recent trip to the Web Summit and their experience as a company there. 

Nicky Deasy, Managing Partner of the Yield Lab was one of the speakers at Amplitude, the conference on Disruptive innovation which recently took place in Lyrath Estate. While at the conference John spoke with Nicky about the investment fund she leads which focuses on high potential projects in the agriculture industry.
