On this week's episode, we talk about some different methods for helping your children learn from opportunities that would normally lead to fights/tantrums, including one that Jackie coined as an acronym - the BRAT Method. We didn’t make up the process, but it's a combination of positive parenting and discipline programs, and we made up the acronym!
Breathe- this step is for the adult. It could be followed by another calm down strategy if it’s not enough for you
Recognize- recognize what is physically going on and say it out loud.
Acknowledge - acknowledge the child’s feelings and validate them
Tame - offer suggestions for calming down OR just sit and be with them
We also discuss The Whole Brained Child and No Drama Discipline by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson, which is a great read if you're looking for ways to improve your interactions with your child.
