Either way, I remain a fan of most Tom Cruise movies. He’s a legitimate movie star and the face of many of the movies from the last few decades… that I still love to this day.

I still have a hard time reconciling Cruise’s antics and the movies he stars in. He’s a movie star—and a spectacular one—not much more.

Jungian Typology

Carl Jung (1875-1961). A Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Hugely influential in the psychiatry field in the 20th Century and beyond.

Jung is considered the “father” of analytic psychology, who coined the term (Analytische Psychologie in the original German). Analytic psychology is also known as Jungian analysis.

Carnivore diet

We spoke about Barbara’s journey with the carnivore diet, and I brought up some of the foods that bother me—some spicy things, for instance.

Yet, I really like spicy food—more of the Mexican and Middle Eastern spices rather than southeast Asian or “American Toughguy” (see: Buffalo Wings).

Some of the Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese stuff immediately registers as fire without any of the taste. No can-do.

Buffalo wings—at least the sauce—are an absolute non-starter for me. Pure pain, no enjoyment.

Ironic, then, after I get off the call with Barbara and I fancy a Lebanese-style meal. I bought some kebabs the other day at Costco where all I have to do is reheat them. We have some hummus in the fridge and some sliced pepperoncini for a little garnish, bite, texture, or what have you.

I ate 3 kebabs, a small helping of hummus, and a few of the sliced pepperoncini. As the night progressed, my stomach started talking back to me, but I paid it little mind and eventually retired for the night.

Come about 1:30 in the morning, not only my tummy, but my throat started screaming at me and I had to get up to get an antacid tablet. Spent a few hours milling around, reading, etc. before I could get back to sleep. Felt back to normal the next morning.

Point is: know your limits. I know most of my limits, yet oftentimes don’t respect them. I need to eliminate things—many spicy things, in particular—from my life bec…

Franco Harris

Steelers Hall of Fame RB Franco Harris, author of 'The Immaculate Reception,' dies at 72

Starting with the 1980 season, Harris became the career rushing leader among active players.

The 1984 Seattle Seahawks did have the “Original” Curt Warner on the roster, but the 3rd pick of the 1983 NFL Draft out of Penn State was injured in the opening game versus the Cleveland Browns, ending his season.

Franco Harris—coming off a season in 1983 where he rushed for 1,007 yards—was released by the Steelers during training camp before the 1984 season, over an ostensible pay dispute.

After the 1983 season, Harris was only 363 yards away from breaking Jim Brown’s career rushing record. Harris joined the Seahawks in September, but only ended up playing in 8 games and ended up with 170 yards rushing on the season. He never played in the NFL again.

John Birch Society

James once worked for the perennially and unduly maligned John Birch Society.

William F. Buckley, Jr., seen by a good many Americans over the last several decades as the paragon of American conservatism, was anything but that. Buckley and his magazine, National Review, were “purgers.” Over the course of National Review’s history, the Buckleyites purged portions of the conservative movement for not falling in lock-step with the magazine’s ideology.

Ideology is an interesting topic when it comes to politics or political discourse. It is harmful. We could get into a long discussion on why ideology is so antithetical to moral order, but I shall just point you toward Brad Birzer’s quick article “Russell Kirk on the Errors of Ideology.”

Birzer wrote an extensive biography on Kirk, ironically one of the founders of National Review and who wrote for the magazine for years, but was then…purged. Kirk’s reputation has been somewhat resuscitated by some over at NR in the nearly 3 decades since his passing, but his idea of conservatism is definitely at odds with the bunch who run the show over there at this stage.

This is a long way of getting to the point that the John Birch Society was not on the “3 x 5 card of approved opinion” set forth by our cultural betters at the National Review, a magazine that has also purged other heroes of mine—namely Patrick J. Buchanan and Dr. Paul E. Gottfried—from their silly “movement” that has ceased to be “conservative.”

Tom Woods—as far as I’m aware—coined the aforementioned “3x5 card of approved opinion” phrase. It is beautiful and explains so much about our world today.

Tom is also a mentor to both James and me.
