Many of the headlines from over the weekend, independent of the partial government shutdown, were as instructive as they were alarming.

As of today, the partial shutdown—now in its fifth day—continues to furlough approximately 34% of the civilian federal workforce, or about 750,000 employees out of a total of roughly 2.2 million (excluding active-duty military).

Somewhat remarkably the stock market continued to climb the wall of worry last week despite headwinds from seasonality, somewhat historically high valuations and notably the partial government shutdown which had carried into this week.

Welcome to day three of the partial government shutdown. Also known as the third day that you’ve not been impacted by the federal government partially being shut down. What’s also not new is politicians treating you as though you’re stupid.

What the trends suggest generally is that red states are likely to get redder with blue states becoming bluer with Democrats who are currently the most motivated to relocate due to politics.
