In this episode we tackle the increasing idolatry of identity politics. The division that is damaging the witness of the church is on the basis of race now weaponized through politics.  

At the heart of this episode is a call, indeed a challenge, for Christians to operate out of union and communion with Christ in all areas, including politics. 

Those who claim Christ but identify themselves with their party affiliation are standing in opposition to the gospel.

Long before there was a democrat or republican there was the sovereignty of the Triune Lord. Long after these parties are swallowed up  in the eschatological consummation of Glory, there will still be the Triune Lord. 

He, alone, matters above all and how we engage in any earthly activity must be centered in His fame and glory!

What is the major problem in racial division in the church? It is not CRT, BLM Christian Nationalism. Nor is it what side of the aisle one lands.  These things are contributing factors but not causal. 

So what is the major hindrance to racial unity in the church: DELIGHT!

We don’t have primarily a race problem or a division problem. Those flow out of a DELIGHT problem. Our unwillingness to live out of a delight in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

For some this will sound far too reductionistic or dismissive. They want- dare I say NEED - the problem to be outside of us (our heart and affections) and the solution to be other than devotion to Christ. Yet, man was made for the Lord and when delight in the Lord is distracted chaos of all kinds erupt.

The history of blacks in this country, though mired in difficulties, oppression and exclusion, has been one that demonstrated our resilience despite such obstacles. This resilience, coupled with a gospel centered view of all of life, positions the church to provide the  transformational leadership the necessary to leading the Body to displaying the beauties of the gospel unity.

With roles of leadership come responsibilities. The is true for every kind of leadership but especially moral leadership. 

In the last episode, Sherard discussed the prophetic role of the black church in leading the church in unity.  Now, in provocative and challenging ways, he calls the black church to the prophetic responsibilities required for such leadership. These responsibilities are framed in biblical, theological, political and social-moral dimensions, with each to be understood in their Christological and redemptive historical context.

Simply bring black does not qualify one to lead. It is only in operating, engaging, and living in a Christ centered way that the black church and Christian can honor Christ in leading the church to reflect a unity that pleases the Lord.

Stop using the term "racism" NOW!  It has too much historical baggage and, too often, it is a label attached exclusively to the white culture. What if the division in the church today was perpetuated by all sides? What if the real challenges to unity were not merely the historical factors of American history, but were rooted in actions and passions and feelings that are true for people in every culture?  The reason this issue of division has been discussed for so long with very little movement is due, in large part, to our varying and often antithetical understanding of the term racism.
