The Briefing Room - Ministry of Health Tech episodes

August 28 E23 - Summer news catch-up
Welcome back from the summer break - you probably noticed a new administration has crept in the back door and got their feet under the table, and we haven’t talked about it much whilst we’ve been off having fun on our big Summer tour. So, we’re catching-up on the news of the last three months across key health tech themes like ambient scribes, the NHS app and virtual wards, plus the new PM and the great debacle of Palantir and the Federated Data Platform. Can’t say for sure whether any pigs were harmed in the making of this episode.

July 23 E22 - AireFest 26 - Lifting the lid on the Neighbourhoods Programme
What is actually happening with the Neighbourhoods Programme? We've heard about it endlessly and it's constantly top of the agenda, but what changes can already be seen on the ground? What's been the impact on staff and patients so far? What's still to come and how clear is the execution plan? We're live at alternative conference AireFest26 in Leeds to investigate, and its the ideal opportunity to ban buzzphrases, policy speak and strategy gobbledy-gook to ask why will this work and how would you explain it in everyday Mum language? Joined by programme leads, digital activists, GPs and more, we're lifting the lid on the whole thing as well as blasting out everyone's favourite royalty-free cover music across the City from our rooftop podcast studio in the sun.

June 22 E21 - Amsterdam road-trip 2026
It's out! Grab a cup of tea and cookie - it's a special feature length episode as we drive to HLTH Europe, Amsterdam. Join a stellar cast from across the best of British health tech as we circumnavigate pirates, sailors, starlings, cyclists, mystery boxes and dutch pronunciation to reach our rustic bedroomless houseboat, throw a party with Digital Care, sail the River Amstel and attend Europe's largest health innovation event. It's been a year since our last visit - so what exactly has changed in the industry and, in the wake of recent seismic turbulence in the NHS, what are people's hopes and dreams for the next 12 months in health tech?

May 27 E20 - Palantir debacle, Wesignation, NHS front door, Confed Expo, HLTH
With Wes Streeting’s departure as Health and Social Care Secretary and the situation over Palantir’s access to patient records going nuclear, we’ve got a bumper episode for you. We’re joined by the HSJ to go back to the beginning with the Federated Data Platform debacle and, with agentic AI for health offers booming from all the big players, Director of Health Policy at the Tony Blair Institute, Dr Charlotte Refsum, talks about who’s controlling the front door to the NHS. Whilst the centre continues to wobble we look at how communities and peer groups are stepping up to lead the innovation charge. Plus, event season is here and, with Confed Expo, HLTH Europe and a trip to the seaside right around the corner, we have a lot to plan for.

April 28 E19 - Spring Fling, neighbourhoods tech, digital smoking cessation, Canada, beach.
As the highs of our Spring Fling begin to subside, we’re talking neighbourhood health, it’s the only show in town right now, but how is healthtech assisting ICBs in making the transition? We’re also asking where health tech meets the transformational new Tobacco and Vapes Bill out this month and, with the latest cohort of UK innovators just back from visiting the Canadian health system, we’re looking into what’s on offer out there for you. Plus, we’re getting ready for NHS Confed Expo and HLTH Europe which are just around the corner - and planning a cheeky little trip to the seaside.

February 27 E17 - Live from Leeds, NICE health tech mandates, headsets for mental health
We’re live in Yorkshire at the HETT Leaders Summit 2026, experiencing local focus with national relevance - and Damian is well out of his Essex comfort zone. Find out more about the big changes at NICE in the way they will be assessing, and actually mandating, health technology in the same way they do pharmaceuticals. Plus, we’re covering more about mental health tech, like we promised, and we’ve got a couple of great case studies ranging from simple tech enabled support services to highly scientific brain stimulating headsets that help people to feel great again. There’s a trip to the pub, catch-ups with the Leeds crew, some general giddyness, our best sound track yet, Northern News and an AI slop meme that makes us laugh.

December 16, 2025 E15 - Christmas cheer, what works in health tech
After a year of ups and downs it’s time for some Christmas joy in the briefing room - we celebrate some of the things that are working really well in health tech, like digital first GP practices of the future and heart-warming music tech for people with dementia. We ask why the NHS app is suddenly sticky, review all the achievements of the year gone by, reveal what’s coming-up next year, and hear 2025 highlights from a star-studded cast of industry innovators.

Damian’s been at the House of Commons pitching three ideas for reform in the health tech market - and we’re joined by former Health Minister Lord James Bethell who’s helping us rip it all to pieces. As 2025 draws to a close, an esteemed panel of innovators helps guide us on plans for how the industry needs supporting in 2026 - plus, for a bit of light relief, we have the behind the scenes bloopers from Westminster and an invite to join us for a health innovators Christmas networking breakfast at Hale House.
