In this episode, I discuss the anniversary of the launching of Sputnik 1, the very first artificial satellite, by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. I give a brief history behind the launching of Sputnik 1, what the results of the launching were, and the reaction to the launching by the United States. I also the launching of two other Sputnik satellites a few months after Sputnik 1. Along with discussing the Sputnik satellites and their details, I also give brief discussions about three of the first spacecrafts launched by the Soviet Union as part of their Vostok and Venera, programmes. Towards the end, I make an honourable mention regarding former Soviet cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, the first and youngest woman to go into space alone on a mission.
