It is easy to take for granted the protections we manifest due to our practice of MyoHoRenGeKyo. As we strengthen and deepen our life condition, our "self" as it embraces our entire environment also influences and modifies our conditions, our relationships with everything from people to attitudes to the world at large. We are mostly unaware of the specifics, but we must not be complacent or unmindful of this treasure.

In "Letter to the Brothers" we read on the advice of Nichiren to be shared with the brothers and to the sangha in regards to filial responsibility and patience with their father, a nembutsu follower. In this letter we find that the father has converted and now practices the Lotus Sutra as his sons do. We also learn in greater detail the condition of the Japanese society of his day. We can observe today very similar conditions.

A reminder that our perception of self is inseparable from our environment. The two aspects of our duality are in fact one entity of sentient mind. Therefore, our enlightenment includes our environment. To awaken to this is liberating from our insular perception of a distinct and separate "self".

In our latter day of the Law, to withstand the tremendous greed and manipulations of today, the insults to reason and intelligence, the constant barrage of foolish attacks on our sensibilities, our minds and our security, to remain quiet or calm in the face of direct insults and social disease, while remaining steadfast in our practice of Buddhism, the Lotus Sutra, MyoHoRenGeKyo, this is what it is to be a "hero" of the world.

All "religions" of the world were designed to apply authoritarian governance of societal control. Buddhism, in sharp contrast, is a mode of self-governance within one's own potential for manifesting a joyful and well experienced life in concert with all life and with equanimity.
