Today I want to talk about a question I recently received. The question was “How do you actually feel like you’re running a business when you work for yourself?” When you first start working for yourself it is a struggle. When you decide you want to go out on your own, it become overwhelming to have total control over your business and time. It can feel like you don’t have a business really, you just have this hobby you are trying to do something with, especially when your main marketing form is social media.
I have a couple tips that you can implement today that will help you have that structured feeling you need to succeed. We as humans as crave some sort of system and routine.
Tip number one is set some sort of working hours for yourself. Make sure these working hours are around your peak times. These times are when you are most productive and get the most done. Show up in those working hours every day. Then work the rest of your life around those working hours
Tip number two takes place after you set your working hours. Everything else falls around those times. Schedule doctors’ appointments, social time, personal time, etc. outside of your working hours.
Tip three is to create some sort of system and structure in your business. This could be an onboarding system for clients, service delivery system, a launch calendar, a marketing/content calendar, etc. These are really important to have in place. These will make you more efficient and also make you feel like you are actually running a business. This also elevates the client experience which leads to referrals.
The main things you need to do is bring intention into everything you do. Intention is what will get your really far. If you don’t feel like you have a business, how can you show up for it?
