A Public Affair

The Capitol Riots and White Supremacy in America

Listen Later

Violence is a central element of American history—and it’s often been used in the service of maintaining white supremacy.
Today on the show, Wednesday host Ali Muldrow hosts a roundtable discussion with WBEZ reporter Odette Yousef and history professor Ashley Howard about their reactions to the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol, the existential white male angst that fueled it, how we’ll remember this time, and what it will take for Americans to move forward.
Odette Yousef is a WBEZ reporter on the Race, Class, and Communities team. She is the host of season 3 of WBEZ’s Motive podcast series about white supremacy in America.
Ashley Howard is a professor of history at the University of Iowa. Her research focuses on African Americans in the Midwest; the intersection between race, class, and gender; and global histories of racial violence.
