E17 — Does Your Résumé Really Matter Anymore?
One page or two? What about three? Every bullet needs a number. Never use this word. Always include that section. Beat the ATS. Follow this exact format.
If you've spent any time online looking for résumé advice, you've probably heard it all—and much of it contradicts something you heard five minutes earlier.
So what's actually true?
In Episode 17 of The Career Owner Podcast, Career Ownership Coach Kim Boyd cuts through the résumé noise and takes a practical, real-world look at what a résumé actually needs to accomplish in today's job market.
Spoiler alert: There is no single perfect résumé formula.
Your résumé still matters—but its job isn't to get you hired. Its job is to clearly communicate your experience, relevance, accomplishments, and professional value and help open the door to the next conversation.
Drawing from decades of corporate, recruiting, HR, and career coaching experience, Kim explores why résumés aren't one-size-fits-all—and why job seekers should be cautious about blindly following every résumé "rule" they encounter online.
✨ Does the résumé still matter?
Yes—but perhaps not in the way you think.
✨ The problem with résumé absolutes
"Always do this." "Never do that." Context matters. Your industry, experience, career goals, audience, and target opportunity should influence your résumé.
✨ Quantitative vs. qualitative accomplishments
Does every bullet need a number? No. Numbers can demonstrate scope, scale and measurable results, but meaningful impact isn't always numerical.
Sometimes the better question is:
What was better because you were there?
✨ One page, two pages...or three?
There's no universal answer. Relevant experience, career level, industry, and the story you're telling should determine what earns space on the page.
✨ More experience doesn't mean including everything
Your résumé isn't your autobiography. As your career grows, your résumé should become more strategic and selective—not simply longer.
✨ ATS, keywords and tailoring
Your goal isn't to "beat" a system. It's to clearly communicate relevant qualifications and make the connection between what the employer needs and what you bring.
✨ AI and résumé writing
AI can be a valuable tool, but it shouldn't become the author of a career it didn't live.
✨ Why a great résumé still may not get an interview
Competition, fit, internal candidates, referrals, timing and other factors matter. A rejection doesn't automatically mean your résumé is the problem.
Pull out the résumé you would actually send tomorrow and ask:
Can someone tell what I do?
Can someone tell what I'm good at?
Can someone see evidence of the impact I've made?
Then choose one position that genuinely interests you and compare it with your résumé.
Have you made it easy for the employer to see the connection between what they need and what you've done?
Don't chase the "perfect" résumé.
Build an honest, compelling and relevant one—and remember, your résumé is only one tool in your Career Owner toolkit.
