  • The truth about motivation

After getting back from a 2 week vacation I was looking for some motivation to get back to my daily routine.  The problem is that the only motivation that exists is my bodies base programming.

This base programming is known as the motivational triad and it governs everything our brain wants us to do:

    1. Avoid Pain
    2. Seek Pleasure
    3. Reduce Effort

This three things are the only thing we as humans are "motivated" to do.

We aren't motivated to work out, eat healthy, or work harder. So STOP 🛑 looking for motivation!

Instead I share how I deal with a lack of motivation to do the things that are good for me in this week's episode.

Listen to us riff on my philosophy of coaching, my tools for coaching, and  just a good conversation about growth with another amazing coach.

  • The Infinite Game - Book Review

This week on the Tools for the Modern Man podcast I review one of my favorite books:
The Infinite Game - by Simon Sinek

I love this book! It does such a great job of highlighting what playing the infinite game is and why we should want to organize our businesses this way. But what I love best is how applicable it is to the parts in our lives that are not business focused.

How can you play the infinite game in your marriage? Parenting?

So, in the podcast I attempt to do just to this great book that I recommend everyone read.

    Top themes include:

    • What differentiates finite vs infinite games.
    • How important creating a Just Cause is to playing the infinite game.
    • What building a trusting team actually means.
    • The importance of finding worthy rivals.
    • The ability to be flexible and pivot when faced with a crisis.
    • Do you have the courage to lead?

Read the book, share the podcast, and start the conversation.

  • The Bell Curve

Have you ever felt like you were exceptional?
What if I told you that you're average?

This week's episode is all about the bell curve and identifying where you are on it.

Are you in the 1% of earners?
Are you smack in the middle of weight?

Do you have a plan to separate yourself from the herd?

  • The Hero's Journey

I have been obsessed with this concept lately and I think it is greatly overlooked in our own personal growth and development cycle.  If you look closely enough every major stage of you life follows the elements of the hero's journey.

This week I dive into my hero's journey and how I use that knowledge to encourage myself to keep going. Knowing these 12 phases will help you to see where you are and what you need to do to achieve success in your goals.

There is no quick fix solution to growth and goals, but the journey is what we have to experience in order to go from a whiny farm boy to a Jedi Knight.

If you want to learn more about the Hero's journey I recommend the book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell.

  • Freedom!

"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way" - Victor Frankl

I'm recording this podcast on The 4th of July, American Independence day and I have my own thoughts on what freedom means to me.

Freedom is not a free-for-all where you get to do whatever you want, whenever you want. That thinking is for children.

    Freedom is choice.

The freedom to choose your actions/reactions to circumstances around you. Don't confuse "rights" with "freedom".  Rights can be taken from you, just as easily as they were given.

    Freedom is always yours.

So go an celebrate independence today and make choices that allow you to be free!
