The Caregiver's Curriculum: A Podcast for Parents Raising Children with Complex Needs episodes

  • How to Know Where to Start When Everything Needs Your Attention

You’ve started gathering data about your life as a caregiver. You’ve identified three buckets that need attention. Now, what do you do with that information?

In this lesson of The Caregiver’s Curriculum, we’re taking the next step in building your Parent IEP (Individualized Endurance Plan): connecting your biggest needs to meaningful, realistic goals that support the kind of caregiver you want to become.

Using our example parent, Carrie the Caregiver, we’ll explore how her three buckets—Advocacy, Connection, and Self-Care—can become starting points for change when paired with a clear North Star vision. You’ll learn how to recognize where your energy is going, consider whether your current efforts are moving you toward what matters most, and begin setting goals that reflect your actual capacity and resources.

Remember, your Parent IEP isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about creating a more sustainable way to care for your family without losing yourself in the process.

Revisit your three buckets and your North Star vision. Begin considering one reasonable goal for each bucket—one that reflects what matters to you and what you realistically have the capacity to work toward right now. You don't have to solve everything at once.

  • Finding Your Buckets: Turning Caregiver Data into Direction

You have the data. Now what do you do with it?

In the last lesson, we introduced your Parent IEP—your Individualized Endurance Plan—and began looking at the information you've gathered about your capacity, resources, energy demands, supports, strengths, and needs.

Now it’s time to start making sense of that information.

In Lesson 7: Finding Your Buckets, we’ll take the data you’ve been gathering and use it to identify three areas of your life that need your attention as you begin building your Parent IEP.

We’re not writing goals yet. We’re not trying to fix everything. And we definitely aren’t tackling all 47 things on your to-do list at once. Instead, we’re looking for the patterns.

    • Where is your energy going?
    • What is demanding the most from you?
    • What is draining you without giving enough back?
    • What is supporting you?
    • And what areas of your life are asking for attention?

I’ll walk you through a fictional caregiver, Carrie the Caregiver, so you can see what this process might look like in real life. Carrie’s data leads her to three buckets: advocacy, connection, and self-care. But remember—your Parent IEP is individualized, so your three buckets may look completely different.

Your job in this lesson isn't to solve your buckets. It’s simply to notice, name, and identify where you need to begin.

By the end of this lesson, you'll have three areas to carry with you into the next part of the curriculum, where we'll begin turning those buckets into Parent IEP goals and asking an important question:

What do I want to change?

Also, just a reminder that I'm planning an upcoming Office Hours episode, and I want it to be shaped by the questions and challenges you're experiencing right now. If there's something you're struggling with, a question you've been carrying, or a caregiving situation where you're thinking, “Okay, but what do I actually do with this?”—send it my way.

  • The Tool You Need to Move Towards Peace in Caregiving

Lesson 6: Building Your Parent IEP

You’ve been gathering the data. Now it’s time to start putting the pieces together.

In this lesson, we’re introducing the Parent IEP—your Individualized Endurance Plan—and connecting it to the work we’ve already been doing throughout this "semester".

Just as a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) begins with understanding their Present Levels of Performance, your Parent IEP begins with understanding your own. How are you currently functioning? What is your capacity? What is draining it? What strengths are you bringing to this role? And how is all of this affecting your ability to sustain the life you’re living?

We’ll take the reflections, observations, and data you’ve been gathering in previous lessons and begin using them to create a clearer picture of where you are today—because you can’t build a sustainable plan for your future without first understanding your present.

This is where your Parent IEP begins.

  • The First Step Towards Sustainable Caregiving...It May Not Be What You Think

Episode 5: The First Step Towards Sustainable Caregiving

Before we can create more peace and sustainability in caregiving, we have to understand where we are starting from.

In this episode of The Caregiver’s Curriculum, we connect the dots between the reflections you've completed so far—your story, the parts of yourself you miss, the strengths you've developed, and your North Star Vision—and begin looking at how your daily stress load may be affecting your nervous system.

For parents of medically complex children, stress isn't always a single event. It can be a constant cycle of vigilance, appointments, medical concerns, school challenges, disrupted sleep, and always anticipating what might happen next. Over time, that ongoing stress can affect how we think, respond, connect with others, and function day to day.

We'll talk about why nervous system regulation is such an important part of cultivating peace in caregiving—and why the goal isn't to eliminate the chaos, but to develop greater awareness of what's happening inside of us so that the chaos doesn't have to determine how we respond.

You'll also be introduced to the Caregiver Burnout Check, a free resource designed to help you step out of the weeds and take an honest look at how you're currently functioning in your caregiving role.

This week's reflection isn't about fixing anything yet. It's about gathering information, recognizing patterns, and giving yourself a starting point.

Because awareness comes before intentional change.

  • Finding Your North Star

    Finding Your North Star

When you’re caring for a child with complex needs, it can be easy to lose sight of yourself somewhere between appointments, therapies, school meetings, medications, unexpected crises, and the endless list of things that need to get done.

In this episode of The Caregiver’s Curriculum, we’re talking about finding your North Star—the values, priorities, and personal sense of purpose that can help guide you when the path ahead feels uncertain.

Your North Star isn’t about having all the answers or creating a perfect plan. It’s about getting clear on what matters most to you and your family so that, when decisions become complicated, you have something to return to. It can help you distinguish between what truly needs your energy and what can wait, let go, or look different than you originally imagined.

We’ll explore what happens when caregiving starts to pull you away from your own needs, how to reconnect with the things that give your life meaning, and how identifying your North Star can help you make decisions with greater intention—and perhaps a little less guilt.

Because finding peace in caregiving doesn’t mean making everything easier. Sometimes, it means knowing where you’re going and why you’re going there, even when the road takes an unexpected turn.

  • The P.E.A.C.E. Protocol™: Your Caregiver’s Curriculum

Class is in session—and today, we’re looking forward.

In the first two lessons of The Caregiver’s Curriculum, we explored where we came from and where we are now. In this lesson, we begin asking the bigger question: Where do we go from here?

In this episode, I introduce The P.E.A.C.E. Protocol™ for Medically Complex Parenting, the framework at the heart of The Caregiver’s Curriculum. Created from my own experience as a medical mom and from working with caregivers in my coaching practice, The P.E.A.C.E. Protocol is designed to help you find your footing within the reality of the life you’re actually living—not try to recreate the life you had before your child’s diagnosis.

We’ll walk through all five pillars:

    P — Prioritize Your Self-Care
E — Examine Your Problem Areas
    A — Advocate for Your Family’s Needs
    C — Create a New Normal
    E — Evaluate Your Progress

We’ll talk about why each pillar matters, what happens when we neglect these areas, and why the P.E.A.C.E. Protocol isn’t a checklist or a finish line—it’s a cycle you can return to as your child, your family, and your own needs change.

This week, take a look at the five pillars and ask yourself:

Which area of The P.E.A.C.E. Protocol do I need the most right now?

You don't have to choose all five. Choose the one that feels most important right now. That may be your starting point.

Have a question you'd like me to answer on the podcast? An upcomming "Office Hours" episdoe will be your opportunity to bring your questions into the classroom.

Submit your questions by emailing [email protected]. You can ask about medical or educational challenges, advocacy, relationships, guilt and grief, burnout, self-care, identity, boundaries, or anything else you're navigating as a caregiver.

Visit www.ittakesavillagenc.com for more information, resources, and ways to connect.

And remember: you don't have to navigate this life alone.

  • Where Are You Starting From?

Before we can learn The Caregiver's Curriculum, we have to understand where we're starting.

In this episode, we take a closer look at how our children's diagnoses have changed us—and how caregiving can challenge the beliefs we once held about hard work, determination, and our ability to fix problems.

We'll talk about the "Caregiver's Impossible Equation"—the belief that if we just work hard enough, research enough, advocate enough, or find the right doctor, everything will eventually be okay. But what happens when we discover that some things are simply outside our control?

We'll explore the difference between what we can control, what we can influence, and what we have to learn to navigate. We'll also revisit our caregiver origin stories and consider the person we were before diagnosis and the person we've become since.

And we'll talk about why caregivers are students, too. Because while we spend so much time learning everything we can about our children, who teaches us how to care for ourselves through this journey?

This episode is an invitation to pause, take a breath, and honestly assess where you are right now—what you've lost, what you've gained, and what you may need to learn next.

Because before we can learn the curriculum, we have to know where we're starting.

  • Welcome to the Advanced Track of Parenting: Your Caregiver Origin Story

Every caregiver has an origin story. A diagnosis changes the course of your life, but it doesn't have to define who you become.

    Lesson 1 Learning Objective:

By the end of today's lesson (episode), you'll understand what this curriculum is all about, why it exists, and why your story didn't end the day your child's diagnosis began.

  • Class Is in Session: Welcome to The Caregiver's Curriculum

Welcome to The Caregiver's Curriculum—the podcast for parents raising children with medical complexity, disabilities, and special needs.

The truth is, none of us signed up for this class. There was no syllabus, no textbook, and no orientation for navigating diagnoses, therapies, IEP meetings, hospital stays, insurance battles, or the emotional weight of caregiving. Yet every day, parents show up and learn as they go.

I'm Carinne Mossa, parent coach, educator, and founder of It Takes a Village Special Needs Parent Coaching. Each week, we'll tackle the lessons no one teaches you—combining practical strategies, research-backed tools, real-life stories, and honest conversations to help you parent with greater peace, confidence, and connection.

Think of this as your weekly class, where compassion comes before perfection, progress matters more than grades, and no one has to study alone.

So grab your notebook, settle into your seat, and get ready...

    Class is in session.
