On today's episode I sit down with Eric Wei, co-founder and CEO of Karat. There are more than 50 million creators in the creator economy with 3.2 million who consider themselves full-time, pulling in six-figure incomes. As creators continue to spin online content into legitimate businesses, Karat Financial aims to position itself as an indispensable resource where they believe traditional banks haven’t been. Wei, a former product manager at Instagram, started Karat with Will Kim, a former analyst for Goldman Sachs, as a way of giving content creators the financial resources they found traditional banks were denying them. Their inaugural product, the Karat Black Card, approves applicants based on their income and social-media followers rather than Fico scores. Also, the Karat Black Card’s rewards system offers customizable cash-back options based on a creator’s industry.

Yahya Mokhtarzada is the co-founder of Truebill. Founded in 2015, Truebill created a personal finance app that uses artificial intelligence to track spending habits. The Maryland company was acquired by Detroit, Michigan-based Rocket Companies, which develops real estate, mortgage and financial services technology, for $1.275 billion in cash (December 2021).

Prior to cofounding Truebill Yahya served as VP of Business Development at Nanigans, an advertising technology platform focused on social and mobile channels. At Nanigans, Yahya executed platform licencing agreements with enterprise advertisers including Ebay, Zappos, EA, Zynga, Amazon and Wayfair.

The company just garnered $55 million in a Series A round that included support from Andreessen Horowitz’s a16z crypto fund, Coinbase, rapper Nas, and fellow electronic artists the Chainsmokers. 3LAU is formerly known as the world-renowned musician and producer, best known for his chart-topping hits and unique DJ style. Starting small at college fraternity parties, 3LAU quickly rose to fame, performing at sold-out shows around the world. Today, he has amassed over 1 billion music streams across Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube, and other platforms.
