True Detective season 2 may have taken a moment or two to get the ball rolling, but this week’s episode, “Maybe Tomorrow” proves that this isn’t quite the disappointing sophomore slump that we were expecting.

The Cast Beyond Carcosa returns to talk about all of this week’s big developments with Vinci and the Caspere murder case. Last week’s cliffhanger had us all on edge, but we were happy to see that Colin Farrell’s Ray was able to live to fight another day. His Lynchian dream sequence served as a nice throwback to a different era of TV while also giving us some crucial character development related to his own paternal issues. Thanks to the near death experience, it looks like Velcoro is back in the game, which means that we’re in for even more great character dynamics with Ani and Paul.

Vince Vaughn’s performance as the mob boss turned businessman has been a pretty big point of criticism for True Detective season 2 so far, but Dalton and I make a case that his descent back into thuggish tactics has proven that he’s more than fit for Pizzolatto’s weightier writing. After one of Frank’s right hand men gets bumped by an unknown assailant, it’s becoming more and more clear that Caspere’s murder was meant to target Vinci’s hot up and comer.

If the first episode of True Detective season 2 was setting the scene, its sophomore episode is definitely putting thing into motion. Night Finds You  puts our detectives to work as they quickly discover that the case of Caspere's death isn't business as usual. The episode feels significant;y more comfortable than the opener and even ends with a bang unlike anything we saw in season 1.

Frank takes things front and center when we learn that he had trusted his entire fortune on Caspere who never deposited his money with the Catalyst holdings company. After recieving some key information from Ray, Frank goes out and does an investigation of his own by utilizing all of underworld connections to find a lead. We learn a great deal about the city of Vinci's corruption through the investigation as his criminal ties lead him through the mayor and other public officials.

Ray and Ani begin to investigate the case together in an uneasy partnership that slowly began to warm on us by the end of the episode. They trace his money through a shady California therapist who seems to be up to no good. Eventually they learn that Caspere was drawn to young prostitutes that lead to underworld connections. Paul continues to be the wildcard this season with very little about his history revealed. We did get the extra creepy scene with his mother that suggested a history of sexual abuse and an uneasy adult relationship. 

The cards all come together when Frank laid his cards on the table for a reluctant Ray when he disocvered that Caspere had a second home in the Hollywood area. This all lead to the shocking death of Ray who was taken down by a shotgun toting Birdman. It's sad to see Colin Farrell's stellar performance get the boot, but we can't help but speculate what this will mean for the case.We dig a little further into each of these characters, the city of Vinci, and sketchy crime connection Caspere had to make our predictions on season 2's core case. 

Welcome to True Detective's newest podcast The Cast Beyond Carcossa! In our grand debut, we crack open the characters and events of the season 2 premiere "The Western Book of the Dead".

The newest season of True Detective has been one of 2015's most hotly anticipated events after season 1 became a suprise smash hit and we're here to decide whether or not Nic Pizzolatto's sophomore year meets the unreal expectations. The debut episode introduced us a new cast of characters made up of Colin Farrell as Ray, Rachel McAdams as Ani, Vince Vaughn as Frank, and Taylor Kitsch as Paul. Out new all star ensemble is brought together to the fictional California town of Vinci as they investigate the supposed murder of Vinci's City Manager, Ben Casper. 

"The Western Book of the Dead" had quite the job to complete. It had establish an entirely new and larger cast in a completely new location while also proving that this is the same sort dark hyperserious drama we fell in love with in the first season. After character introductions, Dalton and I do a scene by scene breakdown of each scene to look for clues to the larger story at hand before analyzing this season's new brand of philosophical mumbo jumbo.
