Gaius Plinius Secundus (23-79 CE), better known as Pliny the Elder, was a Roman philosopher, lawyer, and author. He was born at Como into a prosperous family and never married. At the end of Nero’s reign, he became a procurator in Spain, and afterwards he held posts as a naval and army commander during the early years of the empire. However, he was preoccupied with investigating natural and geographical phenomena, and toward this end he composed an encyclopedic document called Natural History. It became the prototype for all major reference works to follow and comprised thirty-seven volumes. Based on contents, it appears that the work was issued in the year 77. The document remains one of the largest texts to survive Roman antiquity and covers subjects regarding all aspects of academic knowledge.
