It was an all-Slovenian final in Split as two namesakes, Blaz Rola and Blaz Kavcic, took on each other in a final between two players that are extremely accomplished at this level. Meanwhile, the Challenger 50 format keeps giving great opportunities to underrated players, this time the ones to benefit the most were Pedro Cachin and Nuno Borges.
Marbella saw a high-profile final between Gianluca Mager and Jaume Munar, while Zdenek Kolar won his maiden Challenger title in Oeiras. Damian also answers a listener question about the potential of Jiri Lehecka, Jonas Forejtek, and Michael Vrbensky. What's coming on the circuit next week?
Next-Gen is really coming on the Challenger Tour as 18yo Dominic Stephan Stricker and 20yo Zizou Bergs had very dominant weeks in Lille and Lugano. Zadar saw a few surprising runs too but ended up with a much more regular customer, Nikola Milojevic, clinching the title. What's coming for Challenger fans next week?
After a very diverse week on the Challenger Tour, Europe will regain its hegemony of the circuit. But before that, let's talk about what happened at the last event in Biella, Sebastian Baez's unbeaten run or a heavily-American field in Cleveland.
The ATP Challenger Tour circuit stopped in Saint Petersburg and Biella this week and, as always, there was plenty of entertaining action. A maiden champion was crowned in Russia, whilst in Italy, the title went to a more established name.
We had two maiden winners on the circuit this week, Zizou Bergs and Carlos Gimeno Valero. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Czech Tomas Machac clinched the title in Nur-Sultan. The Next-Gen is strong as ever!
The Challenger Tour visited Kazakhstan and the Canary Islands this week. Mackenzie McDonald backed up his Australian Open performance with a near-perfect week, while Enzo Couacaud emerged out of a very even field at Gran Canaria.
More Next-Gen success on the 2021 ATP Challenger Tour as Sebastian Baez and Jenson Brooksby grab their first title of this circuit. Meanwhile, Soon-Woo Kwon really proved his class in Biella, dominating a strong field.
Andy and Damian talk a lot about Andy Murray's showing in Biella, the veteran final at Cherbourg or someone whom they mentioned every week so far, Benjamin Bonzi, finally taking his maiden Challenger Tour semi. Meanwhile, recent alumni Aslan Karatsev is making big strides towards the top of the game.
Quimper saw even more American Next-Gen success as Brandon Nakashima took his second Challenger title over Bernabe Zapata Miralles. Meanwhile, in Antalya, Jaume Munar almost made it to back-to-back titles but fell to Carlos Taberner in the final.
