  • The Opposite Direction
E.F. Schumacher once wrote “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to go in the opposite direction.”
In this episode, John will share insights on how valuable it is to challenge the status quo and “lean” things out in your life. When others are “adding,” stop and consider subtracting. Bigger is not necessarily better. Ask yourself, what can I delete? When others are pushing, try pulling. When others are making false claims and sharing biased opinions, lead with open questions and get the facts. Challenge assumptions, starting with your own. When others are criticizing and judging, practice contemplation and forgiveness. Be curious. Recognize there are two sides to every coin. When others are complicating the simple, learn to simplify the complex. Offer short answers to long questions. Indeed, this is true genius. While others may be speeding up and working harder, it might be best for you to slow down and work smarter. Seek to understand life’s counterintuitive options and misunderstood paradoxes. This is where true wisdom often lies dormant.
     You will discover:
    • Why “Pulling” is much more effective than “Pushing.” What does it mean to pull as a parent or leader? What are some practical ways to do this?
    • How to Avoid the “Closet Space Syndrome.” What is this syndrome and what are some strategies for reversing it?
    • What is the difference between Activity and Productivity? How do we know if what we are doing is truly productive?
    • What is Lean Thinking? Why is this mindset so valuable in business and in life?
    • What is a paradigm and why is it so important to challenge them. What are some of life’s most common paradoxes and counterintuitive solutions?

  • Defining Moments: The Decisions that Shape Your Future
Drawing from several of John’s 20 books, this episode will challenge viewers to identify “defining moments” in their lives and the impact they had on the internal story we tell ourselves. A defining moment can be positive or negative, productive or destructive. The key is in how we respond to them. Examples include losses of any kind. The loss of a loved one. A difficult divorce or break-up. An injury or illness. The loss of a job. Defining moments can also be positive. A new loving relationship. A significant promotion. A major award. A silver-lining. A blessing in disguise.
The internal story we tell ourselves and the beliefs we hold in mind have a major impact on the results we get in life. A sad story delivers more grief. A victim consciousness calls for more pain and suffering. The belief in scarcity robs us of abundance. The mind of a champion brings us more victories, despite occasional setbacks. We all have defining moments in our lives – like a fork in the road. Which way do we go? Up or down? Win or lose? Accelerate or decline?
In this episode of The Change Mastery Show, John will challenge you to rewrite the internal story you are telling yourself if it is holding you back in any way. He will also challenge you to create new, positive defining moments by stretching your imagination, letting go of resistance, and working through any fear holding you back.
    You will discover:
    • How to identify and leverage the “defining moments” in your life. What are some of the most pivotal and memorable experiences you have had that have a lasting impact on the choices you make today? What have you learned from them?
    • Your Internal Story: What do you believe you can and can’t do? What is preventing you from living the life of your dreams?
    • How to turn defeat into victory: What does it mean to “Play like a Champion?”

  • Habits Die Hard
Drawing from one of John’s 20 books, this episode will explore 10 steps to building successful habits. We are all creatures of habit, and if you make good habits, good habits will make you. This wisdom has been around since ancient times. Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”
The subconscious mind – the “habitual” mind – is over one-million times more powerful than the conscious mind. This means that we spend a substantial amount of our lifetime on “autopilot,” playing out the latent mental programs that govern our behavior. The subconscious mind is so vast and powerful that we do not even know what it is thinking or capable of. It truly runs our lives – whether we know it or not.
As creatures of habit, many people struggle with breaking habits. In this episode of The Change Mastery Show, John will help you through this very common, very challenging life experience by giving you ten steps to replace destructive habits with successful ones. If you have habits you intend to change, please join us and share this episode with others.
    You will discover:
    • How to exchange bad habits for good habits. What are some practical and useful steps for making this transition?
    • The Ten Steps: Where do I begin and how do I finish?
    • Maintain the Gain: How do I avoid falling back into old habits?

  • When it’s Time to Say Goodbye
How do you feel when you have to say goodbye to someone or something you love? Maybe it’s a loved one moving on. A child leaving home for college. A parent passing on. An unexpected divorce. The loss of a beloved pet. An injury or illness. A job loss, or the end of a career. Are you more likely to feel grief or gratitude? Sorrow or celebration? Anxiety or appreciation? Fear or opportunity? More importantly, how well do you process these feelings, especially if they are troubling? Do some of these feelings linger for long periods of time? Perhaps forever?
In this episode of The Change Mastery Show, John J. Murphy will challenge you to be mindful of your feelings about loss and recognize that whatever you are feeling, you are asking for more. Extended grief will bring you more to grieve. Gratitude for the experiences you have had will draw in more experiences that bring you joy. Fear will attract more fear, while positivity will free you from the weight of suffering you bear. This is universal law. Certainly, it can hurt to say goodbye. This is a human phenomenon. It can also reveal a deep sense of self-regard and egotism. When a loved one dies, do you think they want you to hurt? Or are you hurting because you have attached your feelings to something you cannot control? Does your loved one hurt? Or have they moved on to a realm of pure joy? These are thoughts that are worth contemplating. John has certainly done so, and he will share how shifting his mindset from suffering to salvation has made a world of difference with the many losses he has experienced – personally and professionally. The same opportunity is available to you.
    You will discover:

    • How to process loss and grief in a positive way. What does it mean to let it in the front door and out the back door without “inviting it for tea?”
    • How to understand human feelings as frequencies of energy that can shift when you take ownership and change the “channel.” What does a shift in mindset look like in terms of application and experience?
    • How to turn loss into opportunity with a shift in mindset. How do look at any situation as a “blessing in disguise.” What does it mean to be grateful for your problems?

  • Leading Change Wisely - Without Authority
What if you see a need for change that requires other people to buy in, but you have no positional power to make the change? What can you do? What options do you have? What skills do you need to get people interested and excited about the change? Now, what if you do have positional power? Do you use it? Do you force the change? What about resistance? How do you handle that? Do you push or do you pull?
In this episode of The Change Mastery Show, John J Murphy will challenge you to rethink the way you approach change and give you specific tools to lead change more effectively. There is no question about it. The world is ever-changing and the better equipped we are to lead it, rather than manage it, the more successful we will be in our personal and professional lives.
    You’ll discover:

    • How to lead change rather than manage it. What are the critical leadership factors to influence change in a positive, proactive way rather than force it or cope with it in a reactive way.
    • Why “Pull” is much more effective than “Push.” How do sage leaders use Socratic teachings, engaging strategies, profound questions, and simple tools to inspire meaningful change? Why is “Better not Best” a helpful mantra?
    • How has John led major transformational changes in organizations all over the world for over 35 years without any authority at all? What did he do? How did he do it? What does it take? What examples does he have?

  • Choice and Consequence: The Power of Understanding Karmic Law
Every day we make thousands of choices. And every choice has consequences. The people we choose to hang out with. The words we choose to use. The timing we pick to speak. The food we choose to eat. The places we choose to go. The media we choose to follow. The books we choose to read. The experts we choose to learn from. The actions we choose to take. And most of all, the thoughts we choose to think.
In this episode of The Change Mastery Show, John J Murphy will challenge you to uncover and rewrite your subconscious story by examining the consequences you are experiencing in life and the choices you are making leading to those results.
     You’ll discover:
    • How Choice and Consequence are a “vibrational” match: We reap what we sow. The Transfer Function :Y = f(x).
    • How Positive “I am” Affirmations can be used to reprogram your mind: In any given moment, what is your “I am” story? What is your EGS (Emotional Guidance System) telling you, and how can you use it to redirect your life?
    • How to establish a clear vision for life mastery and discern activity from productivity. Distinguish what you can and cannot control. Clarify what moves you forward and what holds you back. Build momentum with creative intention and mindful attention.

  • Finding Your Life’s Balance with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
We all have a personality—but do you truly know how yours is driving your decisions, your stress, and your relationships?
In this episode of The Change Mastery Show, John J Murphy dives deep into the world’s most researched personality tool: the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Drawing on nearly 40 years of experience teaching this framework, John moves beyond the "labels" to show you how to use the MBTI as a practical discipline for mindfulness and balance.
    You’ll discover:
    • The "Eight Disciplines": Why your personality is like being right- or left-handed, and how to develop your "non-dominant" side for greater effectiveness.
    • Organizational DNA: How to identify if your team is a "Let's change it" or "Let's keep it" culture—and how to lead through the resulting conflict.
    • The Rational Problem-Solving Secret: How to use Sensing, Intuition, Thinking, and Feeling to make bulletproof decisions.
    • Temperament Insights: Are you an SJ (Dutiful) or an NT (Power-seeker)? Understanding your core drive is the first step to inner peace.
Stop letting your mind control you. Start "minding your mind" and master the art of interpersonal connection.

  • Aging Gracefully: Critical Inputs for Desirable Outputs
Nothing speaks more to a changing world than our own mind and body. We are designed for change; we change every second of every day—naturally. If we choose to resist change, we fight nature and interfere with the innate flow of life. This is why John avoids the term “anti-aging.” When we fight aging, we age faster, grow tired, and give power to the very things we do not want.
In this episode, John offers tips on how to relax into the "flow" of life to improve your quality of life—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Now in his mid-60s, John shares how scientific measures recently placed his “internal age” at just 33 years.

  • Troubling Relationship? Make a Change!
Healthy, positive relationships are essential for a healthy, positive life. This universal principle applies to all relationships, including work, family, friends, the planet, and our own bodies. We need healthy connections. So, stop and ask yourself: How do I feel when I think about my relationship with these things? Is there anything troubling me? Do I feel drained when I am around some people or doing certain things? Should I be working harder and making sacrifices to get along?
Now, ask yourself: Do I like all music? All books? All food? All animals? Chances are, you don’t. The reason for this is that everything has an energetic frequency – people, animals, books, songs, food, everything. So, if you do not feel good with certain people or in specific situations or places, it is because your frequency does not resonate well with those frequencies. This is like trying to like a specific song or genre when you simply don’t! It doesn’t matter how hard you work at it or how much you sacrifice to “get along.” The fact is you are not a good match. This leaves you with a choice. Either accept the disharmony and live with conflict or make a change and find a better match. Keep in mind, this does not mean there is anything wrong with the other person, place, or thing. It simply means that oil and water don’t mix well.

  • Assumptions: The Root Cause to Great Suffering.
Socrates once said, “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” So, ask yourself. Do I really know anything with absolute certainty? Chances are, if you’re honest, you will discover that there is very little, if anything, that you know with absolute certainty. As a result, we go through life making assumptions, forming hypotheses, and experimenting. We construct entire belief systems out of assumptions, and then we play by the rules to fit in. These mental constructs and rules are often called paradigms. We then attempt to solve problems inside paradigms or boxes when it is often the hidden boxes that are the problem. We go to war over underlying assumptions and ignorance. We struggle with health issues, career tracks, and financial well-being due to flawed paradigms. We make poor choices in all aspects of life because of limiting beliefs. Put simply, we get in our own way.
In this episode, John will offer tips on how to uncover assumptions and challenge them with wisdom and discernment. He will also share strategies on how to use assumptions to our advantage. A shift at this level can change everything. You do not want to miss this episode!
