Welcome to another episode of the Screenly Changelog.
This month, we're gearing up for our first-ever appearance at Infocomm 2025 in Orlando. It's a big step for us, and we're looking forward to connecting with customers, showcasing our latest Edge Apps, and sharing what we've been building behind the scenes.
We've officially launched the Screenly Android app, furthering our mission to go hardware-agnostic. Now, users can turn Android devices and smart TVs into powerful signage players with no extra hardware needed.
Viktor took vibe coding for a spin using tools like Cursor to build real Edge Apps in real time. From sensor dashboards to custom toggles, these experiments show just how fast teams can go from idea to on-screen output.
We've also made significant improvements to Screenly Anywhere, including better screen health monitoring and diagnostics. These changes help teams keep tabs on browser-based screens with more visibility and less guesswork.
Our Zapier integration is now fully public and searchable, opening up new automation possibilities for content management and screen updates using tools like Google Drive, Dropbox, and more.
Screenly is now SOC 2 certified, reflecting our ongoing investment in security, transparency, and operational maturity.

Welcome back to The Changelog! In this fifth episode, hosts Viktor and Daniel dive into the latest industry updates, bringing you insights from the tech world, security debacles, and more. After a brief summer hiatus, the duo returns to dissect one of the biggest recent tech fiascos—the CrowdStrike debacle that disrupted the globe, from airlines to emergency services.
The CrowdStrike Catastrophe: A Perfect Storm
The episode kicks off with a deep dive into the CrowdStrike incident that affected an estimated 8.5 million devices worldwide. Viktor and Daniel recount how a poorly executed update led to a catastrophic blue screen of death scenario, requiring manual intervention to recover devices. They discuss the root causes, including bypassed automated checks and a lack of proper testing, which resulted in a crash loop early in the boot process of Windows devices. The hosts highlight the immense challenge of resolving this issue, especially for devices with BitLocker encryption, which required entering long passphrases manually.
The Ripple Effects and Financial Toll
The financial impact of this disaster is staggering, with estimates suggesting costs as high as $4 billion. Viktor and Daniel explore the broader implications, from the disruption of critical services like 911 in Alaska to the shutdown of airports for days. They also discuss the internal fallout within CrowdStrike and the responsibilities of other involved parties, such as Microsoft, in ensuring such vulnerabilities don’t cripple systems again.
The Need for Better Deployment Strategies
The conversation then shifts to the importance of deployment strategies. Viktor shares insights into canary deployments, a method where updates are initially rolled out to a small subset of devices before broader deployment, minimizing the risk of widespread failure. They emphasize the need for IT teams to better gatekeep updates, ensuring thorough testing and gradual rollouts to avoid repeating such massive failures.

Whether you're a seasoned professional or new to the field, this episode offers a wealth of valuable information to keep you informed.
Industry Events and Highlights
The episode kicks off with a discussion about recent major industry events. Digital Signage Summit (DSS) Europe, held in Munich, was a key highlight, featuring strategy awards and recognizing key contributors to the industry. Daniel and Viktor also touch on the importance of security in digital signage, a theme that was prominently featured at the event. The hosts also preview InfoComm, set to take place in Las Vegas, and discuss the exciting sessions and networking opportunities that attendees can look forward to.
New Tools and Innovations
Next, Daniel and Viktor introduce some new tools and innovations in the digital signage space. One standout is the Digital Signage Software Compass, a new tool from Invidis designed to provide buyers with objective data on various vendors, making it easier to navigate the crowded market. They also highlight an innovative implementation by a Swedish burger chain. This chain uses digital signage to display real-time food preparation times, showcasing the potential of interactive and dynamic signage solutions.
Screenly Product Updates
The episode also covers significant product updates from Screenly. Viktor explains the new Edge Apps for transportation, starting with bus stop arrival and departure times in London, with plans to expand to other cities. These apps, available as open-source tools on GitHub, provide customizable and real-time solutions for various transportation needs. The hosts also discuss the overhaul of Screenly Anthias, Screenly's open-source digital signage solution. The transition to the Django framework aims to make Anthias more maintainable and user-friendly, ensuring it remains a powerful tool for basic signage needs and small-scale deployments.
Security Focus
Security in digital signage is a recurring theme in this episode. Daniel and Viktor emphasize the risks associated with outdated hardware and operating systems, stressing the importance of staying updated with the latest security measures. They also discuss the potential impact of legislation like the EU Cyber Resilience Act in safeguarding consumer interests and ensuring the security of digital signage solutions.
Finally, the hosts highlight Screenly's ongoing commitment to security. From the beginning, Screenly has prioritized security, and this episode sheds light on their recent efforts to enhance software supply chain security through software bill of materials (SBOMs). This initiative underscores Screenly's dedication to keeping their software components secure and up-to-date, maintaining their position at the forefront of digital signage security.
