Welcome to Episode 26 of the Encouragers United Podcast!   I'm Charlie Grimes and I'm honored that you would choose to listen to my voice. As host and creator of the Encouragers United my intent is to encourage the encouragers, as well as equip the rest of the world with a window into why we think and act the way we do!

Today I want to unpack what I believe is the Encouragers superpower, and perhaps their ultimate weakness-It has to do with how we see the world. Encouragers have this innate natural skill to "re-frame" their thinking, their perspective, and then direct their passion to maintaining persistence and positivity. However, the weakness in constantly re-framing a situation is that the encourager may seem distant from any feeling real feelings-You see the very super-power that equips us to be great at some things-- can be what actually holds us back from fulfilling our highest potential. So grab a nice cup of tea or coffee-- or just focus on the road if you're driving-- its time to make the world a better place -- for we are Encouragers United.

Hey Hey there Encouragers! How are you holding up? I hope this 25th episode finds you well and figuring out new ways to work, worship, and serve others in these unprecedented times. Thank-you so much for all the kind words and comments on last weeks episode on technology and staying close to Jesus. If you have not listened to that yet-- I encourage you to go find that when you have the time. It was a ton of fun and I hope you can benefit from it. I have a special treat for you today. In this episode of the podcast, I hope you'll be inspired by the work my good friend Rex Broad and a few others have been working on. It's called the Dayspring Music Box! A tool that you might be able to give to a friend or loved one to help them pass the time while staying at home. Enjoy.

Today I want to share with you about a wonderful project I've been involved with for about a year. It's the Daypsring Music Ministry. Some of you may know, my mother in law is suffering from Alzheimer's disease and dementia. She is otherwise physically healthy and doing well, but we all are watching her slowly lose her memories and not be able to think the way she used to. Through it all, however, we have discovered that music is an amazing connector. My mother in law remembers these classic hymns and spiritual songs. She remembers and can sing right along. It's really amazing how we can connect with her through singing these melodies. It gives her comfort, calms her down, and we believe it helps her feel more like herself again. Not only can we share this great time together, but music has such a powerful effect on our minds, our hearts, and our souls. You're going to hear about a dream that my friend Rex had that started this whole thing, and I can tell you that I and my wife and father in law have lived that very dream, and we use our Dayspring Music box as much as we can. It's a tool in our tool box to help love and serve my mother in law. If you have anyone that could benefit from it-- I would encourage you to get one too.

Greetings Encourager nation!  Thanks for tuning in for Episode 24 of the podcast.  This week, I'm dipping into the archives to share with you a message that I have preached several times, most recently at the 2018 Alive Music Festival here in North east Ohio.  I believe it's a great reminder for all of us to balance the use of technology in our daily lives.  Computers, gaming systems and phones are marvelous tools that we use to work, communicate and connect with the world.  However, in this speech, I'm going to ask you to make sure that those tools are working for you-- rather than the other way around.  I use a historical account from the book of 2 Kings 18 in the bible to illustrate that we can quickly be captivated by these "created things" and lose sight of the "creator" who gave them to us.  And in the spirit of King Hezakiah in the Old Testement-- I smash these idols in front of the crowd-- just to illustrate how we should deal with anything that gets in between you and God. Thanks for listening to Episode 23 of the Encouragers United Podcast.   This week I had the pleasure to speak with two young-adults, Leah and Caleb-- college students who have seen their worlds completely disrupted during the COVID-19 virus pandemic.

Every organization on earth has been affected by the spread of this unprecedented virus,

In sports, the NCAA March Madness Men's and Women's basketball tournaments cancelled, along with the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, the NBA, Major League baseball, the PGA tour all cancelled.

In education, Universities have moved all activity to online formats, moving all students off of their campuses to prevent infection.

Churches and religious services suspended and moving to online formats-- Graduation ceremonies, senior sports seasons, theater and music presentations, recitals, the activities that have shaped our lives, all cancelled. Everyone, young and old, is affected. Families are isolated away from each other-- How do we adapt? Can we stay positive through the process of losing so much of what we planned for, and what we are hoping for? Listen to the stories of these two, be inspired that there can be a way through the hurt-- to perhaps find what really matters most, and make memories that will indeed last a lifetime.

Thanks for listening to Episode 22 of the Encourager’s United Podcast.   This week I had the pleasure to speak with two hard-working educators and listen to them explain how they have adapted and modified their teaching strategy and mindsets during the COVID-19 virus pandemic. There are approximately 3.2 million individuals working in 133,000 schools in the United States. These individuals have had to quickly change almost everything they do, adapting to circumstances with a positive attitude and hopeful vision for the future. They are learning new skills everyday, and believe good things for both students and teachers can come out of this difficult time. They have embraced and loved this challenge, and we are proud to cheer them on!

Doctors and nurses, Emergency Medical personnel and Law enforcement workers, anyone who is at a higher risk for exposure deserves our respect and admiration. These individuals are working longer shifts, adapting to circumstances with determination to accomplish their jobs. In their work, lives are often at stake, and we can't any of what they do for granted. So I'm calling all of us to look around, and find somebody to encourage-- for we are truly in this together.

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an unprecedented event in our lifetime.  As of my recording today, April 6th, 2020, 336,000 cases are recorded in the United States, with 9655 deaths occurring, unfortunately more happening everyday. These numbers and the associated warnings from local, state and federal government officials are extremely stressful for people. Fear and anxiety about a disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults, teens and children. However, successfully coping with this stress and the changes well will make you, the people you care about, and your community stronger in the long run.

After a short devotional from Psalm 9, Pastor Charlie interviews Oliva Horner, a professional fitness and gymnastics coach, aspiring chiropractic student, and YouTube content creator.  Olivia gives her advice and encouragement on coping with the stress that quarantine and COVID-19 can cause.

Middle school education calls for passionate teaching and Tyler Moomaw ‘21 plans to take that on in stride. However, a career in teaching was not his initial goal.

“I started coaching students in fifth and sixth grade while I was in high school and I really enjoyed teaching. I also became involved in the children’s department at my church. Yet even with all my experiences pointing to education, I originally wanted to go into physical therapy,” he said.

One day, after having a conversation with his mom, a fourth grade teacher, Moomaw realized that he wanted to teach after all. With this revelation, he recognized that Malone would lead him down the right path toward completing his goals.

“I knew that Malone had an intentionally relational community in addition to a solid education program that would allow me to participate in field experience right away,” he said.

His placement with local middle schools has given Moomaw practical experience in the classroom. “I am being prepared for complexity through my field experiences. So much goes into teaching in a classroom because you have to learn to teach while observing students’ behavior at the same time,” he said.

Along with his field experience, Moomaw says that the faculty at Malone have made an impact on his life and his approach to education. “The intentionality and mentorship of professors at Malone is wonderful,” he said. “They demonstrate how you can show Jesus in the classroom.”

Middle school-aged youth have a special place in Moomaw’s heart and he knows that it is how he can pursue his calling.

“I want to make a difference in my students' lives and positively impact the identity formation they will experience in middle school,” he said. “There is so much more to teaching than content. I want students to know that there is a fullness to life and my goal is that they will be able to witness that through my teaching.”
